A Note From Our Principal

Dear West Springfield Students, Parents, and Community,

I want to welcome everyone back to the 2024 – 2025 school year. We are looking forward to another record setting year as we anticipate increased enrollment for the tenth year in a row! I wanted to make sure that everyone had the opportunity to see the updated school calendar. Our sub-school administrator assignments are as follows:

APs

Our school counselor assignments have been updated and can be reviewed on our Student Services Staff webpage.

The Sub-School Principal, counselors, and administrative assistants will work together in sub-school teams to support students and families. Please reach out to us for any questions or support needs.

While most students will return on August 19th, many have already been back at school participating in Fall sports and band. If you have any questions about athletics or activities, please check out our Student Activities website

We hope that everyone had a wonderful summer break and welcome to another year to Dream Big, Work Hard, and Be Proud. Spartan Strong!

PSAT/NMSQT

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is pleased to announce plans to offer the Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) to students in grades 10 and 11 on October 9, 2024. A PSAT/NMSQT Testing Notification letter is posted online.

All 10th and 11th grade students enrolled at WSHS will be automatically registered for the PSAT/NMSQT, so no further action is required. If you do not want your child to participate in this test, please contact our Assessment Coach, Laura Fitzsimmons (Lmfitzsimmon@fcps.edu).

Digital Format: This fall, the PSAT/NMSQT will be delivered digitally. Some testing accommodations are administered differently on digital tests than they are on paper/pencil tests. Please reference the Using Accommodations on Digital Tests chart to review how each accommodation is delivered digitally.

It is important to note that students will NOT be able to move on or submit a section of the test until their entire approved time has elapsed, regardless of whether the student is finished with that section. This restriction is built into the College Board digital testing platform and cannot be changed by the proctor or testing coordinator on the test day.

If you have questions or concerns about the College Board Digital Testing platform (Bluebook) or about how College Board administers extended time, please contact our Assessment Coach, Laura Fitzsimmons (Lmfitzsimmon@fcps.edu).

Testing Accommodations: Students with disabilities who have testing accommodations documented in a 504 Plan or an individualized education program (IEP) may be eligible for testing accommodations on the PSAT/NMSQT. The College Board must approve a formal request for each student. If the student already has College Board accommodations approved from a previous PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, SAT, or AP test, there is no need to resubmit accommodation requests. Once instated, accommodations remain in place for all College Board testing.

Requesting Accommodations: The Accommodations Process for College Board Testing web page provides instructions on how to request College Board testing accommodations, including the required input and consent forms (Enclosures 2-3). Please be sure to read all footnotes when requesting specific accommodations. To request new or amended College Board accommodations for the October PSAT/NMSQT, return the input and consent forms to the school by August 5, 2024. When returning forms, deliver to:

ATTN: Ashley Springsteen

OR ajspringstee@fcps.edu

If you have questions about College Board testing accommodations for the PSAT/NMSQT, contact our Assessment Coach, Laura Fitzsimmons, at Lmfitzsimmon@fcps.edu, or our SSD Coordinator, Ashley Springsteen (ajspringstee@fcps.edu). Please note that the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) Coordinator is NOT on contract during the summer months so please be patient if you do not receive an immediate response.

SAT School Day

On Wednesday, October 9, West Springfield High School twelfth graders will have the opportunity to participate in the SAT School Day. FCPS will cover the cost for any twelfth grade student to take this test. The essay option and subject area tests are not available during SAT School Day.

A translated version of the form content may be found on the SAT School Day Intent Form webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43896). FCPS sites cannot accept walk-ins on the day of the exam.

General information about the SAT School Day test format is available on the College Board webpage (https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/taking-the-test/sat-in-school). Directions on how to access scores and score release dates are published by College Board via the College Board website. Please note that WSHS will not email scores to students when they are released. Students must access their score through their College Board account, so we encourage all students to log in to or create a College Board account now to be fully prepared.
