Required Immunizations for Rising 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering the 12th grade this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine to the Beverly Barr, Herndon’s Student Information Assistant (SIA), as soon as possible.

Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

PSAT/NMSQT and SAT School Day

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Herndon High School will offer the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) and SAT School Day for 10th through 12th grade students at no cost to families. All tests will be administered in a digital format. Some testing accommodations are administered differently for digital tests than for paper/pencil tests.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and English Learners

Because these exams are operated by the College Board, students do not automatically receive testing accommodations or supports.

Parent Coffee

We hope you are enjoying the summer. As we continue to diligently prepare for the start of the 2024-2025 school year, you may recall that our June 11, 2024 Parent Coffee was postponed after FCPS communicated updated grading policies and procedures for the 2024-25 school year. Our Herndon High School administrative team and key school leaders have been closely reviewing these updated guidelines and procedures and have met with central office staff to ensure fidelity of implementation at Herndon High School. Our department chairs and subject-area leaders will be reporting to a school kickoff meeting on August 5th to review these changes and address any unanswered questions before staff return from summer break.

To ensure all questions can be answered related to these changes by knowledgeable staff, the date for the new Parent Coffee will be Thursday, August 8, 2024. We will hold a meeting at 8:30am and another at 6:30pm. Interpreters will be available as well.

Multilingual Learners Summit: Our Voices, Our Future

.

We're excited to share that FCPS will be hosting a Multilingual Learners Summit: Our Voices, Our Future on Thursday, August 8th at Annandale High School from 5-8:30 p.m.

This summit aims to equip multilingual learners and their families with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive.  A table fair will showcase the many options and opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for our students.  Additionally, guest speaker Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya will offer an inspiring keynote message and engage in dialogue with a student panel.

All secondary level multilingual learners across the division have been directly invited to this event via email.  Additionally, families have been invited through FCPS This Week.  A registration link is available here for attendees. The flyer is available in English and Spanish.

Important Reminders

From the Library

Summer is a great time to incorporate reading into the less hectic days.

  • Students can access ebooks and e-audiobooks all summer long by logging into their MackinVIA accounts. Consider listening to an e-audiobook if your family is traveling this summer!
  • Between June 12 and August 18, Fairfax County Public Library is offering their summer reading program. Registration opens June 5. To find out about Herndon Fortnightly’s programs for teens, visit their calendar here.

Are you looking for particular title recommendations? Check out these book lists for all ages:

If you come across any overdue FCPS library books this summer, you may drop them by Herndon High School during the office’s summer hours, or your student can return them during the first week of school in August.

If your student will not be returning to Herndon HS for the 2024-2025 school year, please complete the Student’s Intention for the Next School Year form.  You can email the completed and signed form to the Herndon HS registrar, Beth Reardon at BAReardon@fcps.edu.

Resources

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide a safe space to address concerns such as:

  • Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss.
  • Anxiety, worry, fears.
  • Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships.
  • Academic stress.

In order for students to participate, caregivers must give permission for FCPS to share basic demographic information with Hazel Health in ParentVUE, and they must provide consent for their student to access therapy services.

Students can then be referred by a guardian or designated school staff member. You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting an FCPS school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

Visit the FCPS Teletherapy webpage for more information.

Student Insurance

During the school day, a student may have an accident that results in injury. There is a common misconception that FCPS (Fairfax County Public Schools) is financially responsible for medical bills resulting from such injuries. However, this is not the case.

Students who participate in sports are required to have health insurance. FCPS does not provide medical insurance for students, but parents can purchase low-cost Voluntary Student Insurance through K & K Insurance Group.

This student accident insurance program offers an affordable way for parents to cover medical or dental expenses resulting from their child's accident. For those who already have medical or dental insurance, this additional coverage can help with deductibles, limitations, and exclusions. For those without medical insurance, these accident policies provide primary coverage.

Please read the information on K&K Student Accident Insurance to determine if this coverage would be beneficial for your child.
