Away for the Day Update
Students will be required to store all electronics in their locker during the school day from 7:30am - 2:15pm.
Students will not be allowed to have electronic devices with them during the school day.
Devices will be confiscated and held for parent pick-up for students who do not comply with the Away for the Day procedure. Unclaimed devices will be returned to students on the last day of each week during dismissal at 2:15pm.

Varsity Tutors Replaces Tutor.com
Varsity Tutors is now providing online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families. It is replacing Tutor.com, which was funded by ESSER through June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide. Low student usage was the primary reason for discontinuing Tutor.com’s services.
Key Messages:
- After careful consideration, FCPS decided to discontinue our contract with Tutor.com effective June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide, including FCPS.
- While feedback about Tutor.com had been positive overall, usage among students across FCPS was not high enough to justify the cost to the school district:
- From the start of SY 2023-24 to April 15, 2024, only 8,400 students used Tutor.com.
- For SY 2022-23, approximately 12,500 students used the service.
- Varsity Tutors is now available for 24/7 online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families. Online tutoring is available in English and Spanish. Visit our Varsity Tutors webpage.
- Families may also choose to access Schoolhouse, a free online, peer-to-peer tutoring service for students 13 years old and above. Schoolhouse was founded by Sal Khan of Khan Academy.
- In addition to online tutoring, FCPS will continue to provide high impact, in-person tutoring to identified students in grades 3-8, funded by the All In Virginia Tutoring Initiative. Schools may contact families of students identified for this program after school begins.
- As always, we will continue our commitment to ensuring students receive the support they need to reach their greatest potential in school and in life.

2024 Key MS JumpStart Registration
Jumpstart will be offered on Thursday August 8th from 9am-1pm. We will serve roughly 200 students. Spots will fill up quickly!
PARENTS: An email will be sent with more information once your child is accepted into the program after registration closes.

PE Uniforms
Uniforms for PE class are available for purchase! You can purchase shorts for $8.00 and shirts for $5.00. You can pay on MySchoolBucks (the links are currently active) or with cash or check at Locker Night (August 14). We do have uniforms in stock, so you will likely be able to pick up your uniform at Locker Night if you have preordered or plan to pay at that event.

Please make sure your student is up to date on all required vaccinations, and make sure that our student service department has an up-to-date copy of your student’s vaccination records.

FCPS Middle Schools offer a free After-School Program every regular school day (with some exceptions). This program is staffed by FCPS teachers and staff, NCS staff, and approved contractors and volunteers. After-School Programs include a variety of activities such as homework assistance, school clubs, fine arts, leadership, sports, and other activities.
The Middle School After-School Program is jointly sponsored by Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services and Fairfax County Public Schools and is exempt from licensure as per §22.1-289.030 of the Code of Virginia with no direct oversight by the Virginia Department of Education.
All students MUST be registered to participate in the after school program.

New Attendance Reporting Feature Launching in ParentVUE for 2024-25 School Year
FCPS is excited to announce an important update beginning with the start of the 2024-25 school year. Parents and caregivers will have the option to submit their student’s attendance directly through ParentVUE starting the first day of school, August 19, 2024. This new feature aims to streamline the attendance reporting process and enhance communication between parents and schools. This change will make it more convenient for parents and schools to manage students' attendance while ensuring the highest level of security.
ParentVUE offers a more secure and reliable platform for managing students' attendance information. ParentVUE will replace the current Attendance Forms, which will be discontinued at the end of the 2023-24 school year.
ParentVUE access and assistance will be provided during Back-to-School events.

Expunging High School Credits
High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA). VA State and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians to make a request to have that course expunged from the student’s record.
Please contact your child's school counselor if you have any questions or to submit the completed Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.
Class Schedules for the 2024-2025 School Year
In preparation for next school year, we would like to set your student up for success! In the spring, students made their course requests for the 2024-2025 school year. You are able to view your child’s current course selections in ParentVUE/SIS. As a reminder, students may be identified for support classes which would take priority over elective choices. 2024-2025 class schedules are available in ParentVUE/SIS and at our Open House the week before school starts.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss course selections, please contact your child’s school counselor after August 12.
