We are preparing for our second year of the FCPS Family Vision Group initiative. We are beginning this year’s recruitment now to ensure we have at least two representatives for each school as required by Dr. Reid. At this time, your school has no parents/caregivers committed to participating in the 2024-25 FCPS Family Vision Group. I need to know if any families are interested in being a part of this. If so, please email me at vlpowell@fcps.edu

This program is designed to foster a collaborative environment where diverse families can engage directly with Dr. Reid on important issues that impact student success. The FCPS Family Vision Group brings communities together to discuss and achieve the goals of the 2023-2030 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes excellence, equity, and opportunity for all students. Key responsibilities of the FCPS Family Connection Group Include:

  • Regularly attend FCPS Family Vision Group meetings.
  • Support the superintendent's outreach efforts to engage families and community members.
  • Actively participate in the exchange of information and perspectives.
  • Serve as ambassadors to your school community by being an additional bridge to sharing information between families and the superintendent.
  • Commit to pursuing the interest of each and every student in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Advanced Academics

Annual Advanced Academics Summer Camp

During the week of June 24th to June 28th, Glasgow Middle School hosted two events: the annual Advanced Academics summer camp from June 24th to June 27th, and the Glasgow Summer Inspire Conference on June 28th.

From June 24th - June 27th, teachers facilitated student learning centered around the common theme of “creating a better community using STEM”. Current and future Glasgow students were challenged to identify a community, brainstorm its challenges, conceive innovative solutions or improve existing ones, plan their solutions, and then develop them. Additional learning activities included building rockets and learning about dissection, among others.

Participation in the STEM camp enabled students to explore concepts beyond the traditional classroom setting, ignite their curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM subjects, and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity through interactive, practical experiences. All activities aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

In addition to hands-on learning activities, students participated in a chosen club activity each day such as gaming club, candle making, birdhouse building, soccer, bracelet making and comic book creations.

summer camp

Friday, June 28th, brought about a wonderful opportunity for students to present their final presentations to parents and other community members who attended our Glasgow Summer Inspire Conference! Over 100 people crowded Glasgow’s hallways to hear student presentations and interact with our esteemed guest speaker, Akilah Darden. Mrs. Darden is the founder of The Darden Group, LLC, a company specializing in construction management. During the guest speaker’s presentation, Mrs. Darden spoke about her path to owning her own business. In addition, she challenged participants to create their own construction that would hold the most amount of weight at the lowest cost. Various stipulations were placed on participant creations during their construction challenge.

We are hopeful that every learning experience the students engaged in will carry over into their educational experiences during the school year. This camp is available to all current and rising Glasgow Middle School students during the last week of June each year. For information pertaining to the 2025 summer camp, please contact Mrs. Camille Burden, Glasgow Middle School IB Coordinator and Advanced Academic Resource Teacher at caburden@fcps.edu.

Varsity Tutors

PANTHER

Varsity Tutors Replacing Tutor.com

Starting in the school year 2024-25 we are replacing Tutor.com with Varsity Tutors. Varsity Tutors:

After careful consideration, FCPS has discontinued our contract with Tutor.com effective June 30, in conjunction with the end of ESSER funding for school districts nationwide. While feedback about Tutor.com has been positive overall, usage among students across FCPS has not been high enough to justify the cost to FCPS. Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, Varsity Tutors will be providing online tutoring services to FCPS students at no cost to families and no cost to the school division. More information about Varsity Tutors will be forthcoming. In the interim, these talking points may be helpful. As an alternative to Varsity Tutors, students may choose to access Schoolhouse, a free online, peer-to-peer tutoring service, founded by Sal Khan of Khan Academy. In addition to online tutoring options, FCPS has implemented a high impact tutoring program offered to identified students in grades 3-8 funded by the All in Virginia tutoring initiative, at no cost to the division.
