Congratulations, Mr. Spear!
Please join us in thanking Mr. Shawn Spear, for 28 years of service to FCPS, the last 9 years being at Irving Middle School! Mr. Spear will be retiring from FCPS on July 31. We are so grateful to Mr. Spear and his commitment to a safe and positive learning environment for all staff and students. His unwavering dedication to ensuring that teaching and learning happens daily with minimal disruption, is evident by, as one student said, his ability to be "everywhere in the building". With an average daily step count of 20-30,000, we can confirm - Mr. Spear was everywhere, which made him excellent at building relationships and an expert in all things Irving Middle!
Mr. Spear will be supporting a new assistant principal in late July/early August. We will share more information once a candidate has officially been named. We wish Mr. Spear all the best in his future adventures!

Revised Bell Schedule
To ensure we are supporting students in the best ways possible academically, emotionally/socially, and behaviorally we have decided to adjust our bell schedule. Below is our updated bell schedule. This schedule offers
- more consistency in planning lessons for our advisory time
- opportunities for students to start their days with a announcements and morning meeting
- time for lessons that support positive behavior, social and emotional learning, and developing Portrait of a Graduate skills
- teachers the ability to provide intervention and just in time support
- students the time to demonstrate their learning through Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning (POGPOL)
- enrichment opportunities for all students
Updated delayed opening and early dismissal bell schedules have been updated on our website.
WIMS Summer Reading
Rising 7th and 8th grade students are encouraged to participate in Irving’s Summer READ! program throughout the summer break. Check out the promotional video here! (voice-over version of the video is also available). From the Irving website, students and parents/guardians can print out a copy of the choice board which lists 24 different reading challenges. When students complete a square of the choice board, they answer a few questions about what they read on a Google Form (https://bit.ly/WIMSSUMREAD2024). For each entry that students enter into the form, their name is entered into a raffle for $25 Barnes & Noble gift cards. Students have the opportunity to enter up to 24 times. Four gift cards will be rewarded randomly by choosing names from among the participants. A student may win only one gift card.
