Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It truly was a remarkable year at Key MS! Reflecting on the year, we have so much to celebrate and so much to be proud of our students for accomplishing! The Key MS 2nd Annual STEM event was a huge success with many or our students participating. Our cross country and track programs got new students engaged in competitive sports; our students performed in concerts, plays, and our spring musical, The Descendants; programs like AVID, Young Scholars, and SCA connected our students to leadership, career, and higher education experiences; and we incubated and hatched chickens, who now live in our courtyard! We celebrated our students’ achievement at honor roll ceremonies, excellent attendance parties, and end-of-year awards ceremonies, and their hard work paid off! I’m proud to share with you that we saw improvements in our Algebra, Language Arts, and Science SOL scores, and we reduced our chronic absenteeism rate!

Every day, I feel very fortunate to lead this school and serve this community. It has truly been a privilege and an honor getting to know your students this school year! To families of our rising 8^th graders and families who have elementary-aged students coming to us in the future, I look forward to continuing to partner with you to help your students achieve their goals. And to the families of rising 9^th graders, we have loved working with your students. Seeing them go is bittersweet, but I know this next step is full of possibility and excitement. On behalf of the Key Middle School team, congratulations and best wishes!

Lost and Found

LAST CALL for students to claim their items in the lost and found, which is overflowing with coats, sweatshirts, water bottles, etc.  If your student is missing any items, you should check the lost and found by Friday (6/21/24) as all items will be donated or discarded on next Friday afternoon. 

Technology Update Be on the lookout for a message from Technology Specialist regarding student tech needs. He will be reaching out to families directly through Talking Points.

Expunging High School Credits

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA). VA State and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians to make a request to have that course expunged from the student’s record.  

Please contact your child's school counselor if you have any questions or to submit the completed Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School Form.

Mental Wellness

Virtual Mental Wellness Consultations

This summer, the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from Monday, June 24, through Friday, August 2. Any FCPS parent or secondary student will have an opportunity to schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference. 

Parents of students in any grade level can request a consultation to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.

Students in middle or high school can request a consultation to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

Consultas Virtuales de Bienestar Mental

Este verano, la Oficina de Servicios de Intervención y Prevención de FCPS ofrecerá Consultas de Bienestar Mental virtuales desde el lunes, 24 de junio, hasta el viernes, 2 de agosto. Cualquier padre de FCPS o estudiante de secundaria tendrá la oportunidad de programar una consulta de 45 minutos con un psicólogo escolar o trabajador social escolar por teléfono o videoconferencia. Los padres de estudiantes de cualquier grado pueden solicitar una consulta para recibir orientación sobre cómo apoyar el éxito social, emocional y académico de sus hijos. 올여름, FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention 서비스 사무실에서 6월 24일(월)부터 8월 2일(금)까지 온라인 정신건강 상담을 제공합니다. FCPS 학부모나 중/고등학생은 누구나 전화 또는 화상 상담을 통해 학교 심리학자나 학교 사회복지사와 45분간 상담을 예약할 수 있습니다. 

모든 학년 학생의 학부모는 상담을 요청하여 자녀의 사회적, 정서적, 학업적 성공을 지원하는 방법에 대한 안내를 받을 수 있습니다. 지역사회 자원에 대한 정보도 제공됩니다.

중학교 또는 고등학교에 재학 중인 학생은 상담을 요청하여 불안, 기분, 행동, 또래 또는 가족과의 상호작용, 학교 전환 및 변화와 관련된 고민에 대한 안내와 지원을 받을 수 있습니다. 정리 및 시간 관리와 같은 학업 문제를 해결하기 위한 전략과 방법도 안내받을 수 있습니다.

Class Schedules for the 2024-2025 School Year 

In preparation for next school year, we would like to set your student up for success! In the spring, students made their course requests for the 2024-2025 school year. You are able to view your child’s current course selections in ParentVUE/SIS. As a reminder, students may be identified for support classes which would take priority over elective choices. We will notify you if your student has been identified for a support class. 2024-2025 class schedules will be available in ParentVUE/SIS and at our Open House the week before school starts.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss course selections, please contact your child’s school counselor by June 10th. 

Pediatric Health Fairs

• INOVA Back to School Pediatric Health Fairs

Inova Cares Clinic (ICC) will provide children ages 5 and older with free school entrance physicals and immunizations at summer health fairs for children on Medicaid or who are uninsured. The clinics will take place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the following dates:

• Saturday, June 29, at ICC for Children - Manassas
• Saturday, July 20, at ICC for Children - Herndon
• Saturday, August 17, at ICC for Children - Falls Church

Appointments are required; no walk-ins will be allowed. Call 703-698-2550 for an appointment.

Required Immunizations

• 🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations. 

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

• Spanish: 🩹 Vacunas obligatorias para los que ingresan al 7º y 12º grado

Las vacunas son obligatorias para todos los estudiantes que entrarán a los grados 7 y 12 este otoño. Visite la página web de inmunización de FCPS para aprender sobre las vacunas requeridas.

VIP Summer Camp

2024 VIP Summer Camp will be held at Sandburg MS July 1^st – August 1^st 2024. Sandburg MS will serve rising 7^th and 8^th grade students from Key MS, Twain MS, Hayfield SS, Sandburg MS, and Whitman MS. Online application went live Tuesday March 12^th at 6pm. The Family Resource Center (FRC) has a list of dozens of summer camps including general camps, camps for students with a variety of needs, and camps for children of military personnel. 

They’ve also prepared a list of adapted resources, sorted by activity, that are inclusive for children and adults of various physical abilities.
