1.Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

Wow, we jumped right into June with a plethora of culminating celebrations! Third grade kicked off the week by dressing up as their chosen famous person to emulate a Wax Museum. Students were very well rehearsed as participants pushed a button to hear bios and fun facts. Our 5th graders were very busy this week as they participated in a medieval dance presentation and the Global Awareness Technology Project (GATP). We are so proud of their large motor coordination and creative minds!

On Wednesday, our gym was filled with families and friends as they attended the 6th Grade Showcase. The audience was amazed with the talent as the students debuted their evening performance filled with lead singers, choreography, costumes, narrators, and a chorus ensemble. Hats off to the grade 6 team and music teachers for their vision and director expertise!

A librarian from the Fairfax County Library system visited on Tuesday to share some ideas for great summer reads. As a reminder, try your best to make some time to visit our local public library. See below as well for our Fairfax Villa Reads summer adventure!

Friday, we had a beautiful day for our field day.  Thank you to our PE teachers, Ms. Iudicello and Mr. Beach for organizing a variety of fun activities and to our teachers and many parent volunteers who came out to support the event.  We couldn’t do it without all of you!

Finally, one of our favorite community traditions of the year is when we welcome our former Fairfax Villa Dragons back to their elementary school to grace the hallways with their many accomplishments. The graduates gathered in the lobby to be greeted by some of their former teachers and then walked the hallways as our current Fairfax Villa Dragons cheered them on with congratulatory claps and cheers. I had the pleasure of seeing those same graduates receive their diploma during the Woodson High School graduation ceremony on Thursday afternoon. Congratulations to all of them and to their supportive families!

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Interim Principal

2.Villa Summer Reading Adventure:

Research shows that it’s important to keep children reading over the summer in order not to lose reading skills. To support summer reading, please explore the Villa’s Summer Reading Adventure with your child. Kids can explore different genres of literature and find engaging and award-winning digital books online through their FCPS accounts.  There are parent resources to support their continued learning.  The link will also be on the Villa’s website.   Villa Summer Reading Adventure

3.Last Day of School- Early Release

Wednesday, June 12th is the last school day for this year.  Students will dismiss two hours early at 2:00 p.m.  Progress reports will be distributed this day. If your child will not be in school on the last day, please make plans to come to the school office this summer to pick up your child’s progress report and any remaining items from the classroom.  Please note our school office will be closed on Monday, June 17th, Wednesday, June 19th, Thursday, July 4th, Friday, July 5th, Wednesday, July 10th, Thursday, July 11th, and Friday, July 12th..  Summer Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you need to pick up outside of these hours, please contact Karen Wells, kewells@fcps.edu or by calling the school office 703-267-2800.

4.Pop in with the Principal

Join us on Monday, June 24th from 3 to 6 p.m. to meet our new Principal, Mrs. Linda Textoris.

5.Lost and Found Items to Be Donated

We still have a number of items in our lost and found.  These are on tables by the front office. As you attend end of the year events, please check to see if any belong to your child.  All unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity at the conclusion of the school year.

6.URGENT NEED: A 2024-25 PTA TREASURER

Your friendly Villa PTA Board needs you! We're urgently seeking a parent volunteer to join us as the PTA Treasurer for the 2024-25 school year -- we legally cannot have a PTA at the school without a Treasurer, and we're hoping one of you is willing to step up and have some fun with us.

We know your time is precious -- and we also know how rewarding it can be to support your child's school experience with a term on the PTA board. You'll get to know school teachers and staff at a deeper level, help bring our free school events to life with enthusiastic fellow board members, and have a direct say in how we spend our annual budget in service of our school community.

No finance background needed -- even an English major can do this job (and your current PTA president can vouch from personal experience on that). We'll get you trained up in no time, and we'll have lots of fun along the way. Help us help you help the Villa community -- please email villapta@gmail.com to learn more about this essential (and totally doable) role with the PTA!

9.Virtual Mental Wellness Consultations

This summer, the FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will offer virtual Mental Wellness Consultations from Monday, June 24, through Friday, August 2. Any FCPS parent or secondary student will have an opportunity to schedule a 45-minute consultation with a school psychologist or school social worker by phone or videoconference.

Parents of students in any grade level can request a consultation to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social, emotional, and academic success. Information about community resources will also be provided.

Students in middle or high school can request a consultation to receive guidance and support for concerns related to anxiety, mood, behavior, peer or family interactions, or school transitions and changes. Strategies and tools can also be provided to address academic challenges such as organization and time management.

We encourage all families to take advantage of this service. Request a consultation or call and leave a message at 703-503-2520.

10.Yearbooks are still available!

8

Yearbooks are still available for purchase. They are $13.00 per book, cash (exact change only) or check to “Fairfax Villa Elementary '' only. Order forms are available in the main office.  Yearbooks are no longer available for purchase online.

There is a limited supply, please get your order in as soon as possible.  When they are gone, they are gone.

11.Medication Pick-up Reminder

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than 2:00 pm, student dismissal time, on the last day of school, June 12. Medications left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school.

12.🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2024-25 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2022-23 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.

13.Summer Fun for All! Summer Camps and Adapted Recreation

The Family Resource Center (FRC) has a list of dozens of summer camps including general camps, camps for students with a variety of needs, and camps for children of military personnel.

They’ve also prepared a list of adapted resources, sorted by activity, that are inclusive for children and adults of various physical abilities.

Learn more by calling 703-204-3941, emailing FRC@fcps.edu, or visiting the FRC webpage.

14.Register New Students Online

Online registration is available for new and returning (re-enrolling) FCPS families! Apply today to help us plan for the 2024-25 school year. Do you have a new neighbor?  Encourage them to register as soon as possible!!

2

If you have an unregistered child who will attend Fairfax Villa Elementary next school year, please complete the online intake form to plan accurate class sizes/staffing for next year.

📢Please spread the word to your neighbors who will have children attending Fairfax Villa ES.📢

If you have any questions, please contact Silvia Dossmann at smdossmann@fcps.edu.

15.Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow. We All Belong Here!

1

As of today, the percentage of chronically absent students at FVES is 9.3%. We exceeded our goal to have less than 12% of our students have chronic absences (missing more than 10% of the school year, or 18 days by the end of the year). Attending school is important and can impact your child’s future:

  • Absences, even if they are excused, can add up to academic trouble. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.
  • Children who miss too much school in kindergarten are less likely to read well by third grade. By middle school, absenteeism can predict who will graduate from high school.
