Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Happy June, SoCo!

We are in the thick of end of year celebrations and preparing for the graduation of the class of 2024, which promises to be one of the best! As we prepare for the ending of another great school year, let’s also reflect on some very special memories that occurred in the past week.

Honoring Lillian Blackwell!

I was happy to attend a landmark event in Fairfax County: the unveiling of the inaugural marker of the Fairfax County Black/African American Historical Markers Project. This event celebrated the legacy of civil rights activist Lillian Blackwell and took place at Oakton High School, where all of her children attended school. The event was captured in a news story, which can be found here: https://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2024/06/civil-rights-activist-honored-by-fairfax-county-students/. I was so proud to learn that three of our student alumni, as a class project with our Social Studies Department Chair, Sean Miller, spearheaded this historical marker. Way to go, SoCo!

South County is on Track!

Congratulations to our incredible Girls Track team for racing their way to a fantastic second place finish in the state tournament! You've truly outpaced the competition and sprinted into our hearts. Your hard work, determination, and team spirit have shone through every step of the way. You all deserve a standing ovation for this remarkable achievement. Keep running strong, champions!

I am thrilled to share the news of our boys and girls track teams hosting one of the most celebratory and formal end-of-season celebrations that I've ever seen. The evening was a splendid mix of joy, elegance, and camaraderie, reflecting the dedication and hard work that each athlete has poured into this season. It was a night filled with laughter, heartfelt speeches, and well-deserved recognition of their achievements. A huge thank you to Coach Mo, his coaching staff, and everyone else who made this event possible. Lastly, congratulations to our amazing track teams for making this season unforgettable!

A Night of Champions!

This past Sunday evening, we experienced an extraordinary celebration of athletics that truly showcased our SoCo spirit! Our student athletes were honored with a variety of recognitions, and the atmosphere was filled with heartfelt congratulations and support for one another. This sense of community and celebration is what makes SoCo such a special place. A special shoutout to Mr. Wooten and Ms. Bashore for coordinating this fantastic event, and to Mr. Aldo Razo for capturing the memorable moments with his amazing photography. Go SoCo

And the Beat Rows On!

The South County Crew team participated in the National Championships in New Jersey, and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Pennsylvania. At Nationals, South County was represented by 24 athletes in various categories. Despite challenging conditions, including heat, sun, and wildlife, the team performed admirably. The Men’s Varsity Four narrowly missed advancing, the Women’s Junior Four placed 19th, and the Freshman Eight made an impressive upset. The Women’s Varsity Four reached the finals, finishing 6th overall. At the Stotesbury Cup, the team faced tough competition and variable weather. The Women’s First Varsity Four reached the finals, narrowly missing a medal by 0.03 seconds. The Men’s Second Varsity Four also made the finals, finishing 4th. Despite not securing medals, South County demonstrated strong performances, showcasing the talent and determination of their rowers.

South County Spectrum: A Pyramid of Artistic Talent

South County teachers were brimming with pride this Saturday, June 1st, at the SoCo Pyramid Art Show. Students from K-12 were represented in the McGuire Woods Gallery of the Work House Art Center here in Lorton. Beautiful works in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and digital art graced the gallery. We at South County are so thankful to the Work House Art Center for granting us such a wonderful space to showcase our students' work, and we applaud all our young artists for their hard work and vision.

Academic Aces: Celebrating Student Success

A week ago, we celebrated our Underclassman awards, and this week we continued the recognition celebrations with our seniors. We have amazingly talented students in our Stallion Nation, and it’s truly one of my favorite things to do when we shine the spotlight on them!

Brushing Away Stigma

I want to thank Senior Maya Martinos for the latest mural that’s new to our school. Her Bring Change to Mind club, which features the destigmatizing of mental health, has brought rays of hope to many in our school who need encouragement. Thank you, Maya!

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the South County High School health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that prescription medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian.
