Class of 2024 - In the News

Featured on Front Page of FCPS Website: From Immigrant to George Washington University Annandale Grads Leave Legacy:

Sosan Barakzai and Husna Basiri, Afghan immigrants and AHS Class of 2024 graduates, jumped into action in 2021 in the wake of a crisis that sent tens of thousands of Afghan refugees to the U.S. Recalling their own struggles as newcomers to the U.S. and the Virginia public school system, Sosan and Husna wanted to ease the way for others navigating challenges like what gummy bears or cafeteria food may be Halal friendly or how to turn in homework on school assignment tracker systems. Afghan refugee Samiullah Luddin, a senior at Annandale High School, did not have the easiest path to graduation. Samiullah — whose family left Afghanistan after his father survived being kidnapped by the Taliban and detained for months — began his American public school experience in 2020. He showed up to school for the first time in the U.S. to pick up a laptop, ready to embark on virtual learning like students across the country during the early days of the pandemic. Class of 2024 - Senior Spotlight

Milagro Cruz: A true leader at Annandale HS, supporting the peer helper program, holding club officer positions, and working after school.

Milagro's journey and resilience in overcoming obstacles are truly inspirational. After moving from her native country, El Salvador, Milagro challenged herself to complete high school despite the many obstacles she faced. Her exceptional commitment to learning, problem-solving skills, and enthusiastic dedication make her a standout candidate for recognition. Additionally, her involvement in supporting the peer helper program at Annandale, holding club officer positions, and working after school further highlight her outstanding contributions and leadership qualities.

Maria Fernanda Duarte: A teen mom as a freshman, now graduating a year early thanks to her dedication.

Fernanda’s story is of a multilingual student who has overcome adversity and persevered to accomplish her goals in education. As she began her journey in high school, she became pregnant during her 9th grade year. While this may have been a setback towards graduation or life goals, Fernanda embraced becoming a teen parent and working part-time with grace and resilience. She has been determined that she would not allow this to be an excuse to dropout or become a setback towards her graduation. In fact, last year, she decided that she wanted to graduate early with the class of 2024 (instead of 2025). Fernanda is not only a dedicated student, teen parent, and multilingual learner, she is an absolute joy to be around and brightens up the room she walks into. She has graciously agreed to return next year to talk to our multilingual students about resiliency and overcoming adversity to graduate. She is determined and ready to start at NOVA as she begins her collegiate journey towards Bachelor of Science in Nursing to become a pediatric nurse. Her impact as a future nurse and AHS alumni will have a positive ripple effect on those that need a glimmer of hope and empowerment to never give up.
