Churchill Chatter - Issue 18, May 31, 2024

gotr

Dear Churchill Road Families,

What a fabulous few weeks we have had leading up to the end of the school year. Our band and string students, under the direction of our band teacher, Alex Singer, and strings specialist, Chris Fyhr, put on a wonderful musical performance for our students and families. Our second graders performed their musical, How Does Your Garden Grow?, to rave reviews. Our Girls on the Run team, led by Jill Truax, Sue Lackey and Meghan Overend braved the elements and completed their 5K on a rainy Saturday morning.

As we approach the end of the school year, we have a series of events to look forward to at Churchill Road, including our chorus concert, 3rd grade Ancient Civilizations Day, 6th grade hot air balloons and Promotion Party, 1st grade Reading Rodeo, All School Field Day, our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony, and our end of year class celebrations. We are sincerely eager to celebrate all we have accomplished together.

Many thanks to the PTA for the lunch they provided to us this week!  It was such an encouragement as we seek to be the very best we can be as we finish the school year.

We again thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pierson-Barr and Ms. Niccolls

We are so appreciative for all Ms. Niccolls has done to support Churchill Road families and students over the past 9 years. She is an incredibly loyal individual who has always looked out for the interests of our students in every way.

Next Thursday, June 5th, Ms. Niccolls will be at the front door at arrival and dismissal should any families like to stop by and send her off with "Congratulations"!

Please join us in congratulating her on a job well done!

A Cup of Sand for Any and All Beaches!

Did you know that sand looks different on every beach across the United States and around the world?  I’ve read that you can find sand in most of the colors of the rainbow.  So cool! (Read an article - click HERE!

Would you bring back 1 to 2 cups of sand from any beach you visit this summer? From Virginia Beach to India to Antarctica, we want to see all the different types of sand you find. 😊 Simply put the sand in a small clear Ziplock baggie. And attach a notecard telling; your name, the name of the beach, the state or country where you found it and bring in back in August.  We will plan to gather and display the sandbags during Back to School Night.

Happy Beach Walking!

Health Room Notice

Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. Student Test Results Coming Soon

Later this month, you will begin receiving your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, view this list of tests by grade level on FCPS’ website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be posted in SIS ParentVUE, or sent by mail or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student assessments, including what each assessment is testing for and how to interpret the test results. Caregivers should contact their children’s teacher with any testing questions.

New SOL Growth Reports for Grade 3-8 Tests Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) test results, along with other student data, help demonstrate in which subjects or topics students may need additional academic support.

In order to help interpret SOL results for parents, the Virginia Department of Education has released new Standards of Learning Growth Parent Reports for families of students who took grade 3-8 SOL math and reading tests this spring.

The Growth Parent Report ties together scores from fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) with the student’s current spring SOL results to show their trend in academic progress this year.

Learn how to understand your student’s grade 3-8 SOL results and find resources to support their ongoing learning.

Did You Know...

Nauman Naeem MD from Psychology Today writes, “At any given moment there are hundreds of entities vying for our attention — whether they are people we are close to, workplace associates, email accounts, social media, popular culture, marketing and advertising, and global events.” This attention seeking is usually to fulfill someone else’s agenda. People fear being bored but in reality, it means nothing needs your attention in that moment. Here is the full article, The Beauty of Stillness
