Principal's Message

Dear Eagle Community,

What a busy week of congratulatory events at Katherine Johnson Middle School. We inducted over 300 Eagles into our National Junior Honor Society on Wednesday evening. We are so proud of the current and new members and their hard work both academically and in the community. Way to go, Eagle Scholars!

Many of our multilingual students had a hands-on experience navigating Fairfax High School this past week learning all about how to become a Roaring Lion! Have a second chance to learn the layout of FHS and meet the staff will ensure a much smoother transition.

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, we hosted our annual hands-on CPR and AED training with the City of Fairfax Fire Department and the guest trainers from Gwyneth’s Gift. This is always a special guest for me personally as Gwyneth was my student in Stafford when I was an assistant principal. Our staff did a Breakfast for a Cause and donated $100 so more schools could have this training opportunity. Please ask your Eagle what they remember from this important training.

We would like to extend a congratulations to all of our Fairfax High School seniors. Yesterday, we welcomed our seniors back to KJMS for the traditional Graduation Walk (also know as the grad walk).  The celebrations continued at the FHS graduation on Tuesday, June 4.

Additionally, we want to congratulate our extended family of other high school and college graduates during this spring of 2024. We have much to celebrate with our families!

Finally, we are thrilled to announce the conclusion of our first middle school sports season! This past Thursday, we hosted a wonderful end-of-season banquet dinner to celebrate the achievements and hard work of our students, coaches, and families. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this season a glowing success. Your dedication, support, and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring.

We look forward to seeing you all next season for more exciting sports action!

School Board Votes to Adopt Fiscal Year 2025 Approved Budget

The Fairfax County School Board voted to adopt Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Approved Budget at their last board meeting. The FY 2025 Approved Budget totals $3.7 billion — a net increase of $233.2 million or 6.6% over the previous year.

The FY 2025 Approved Budget focuses on providing educational excellence for all students and ensuring that employees’ hard work and dedication are acknowledged through competitive compensation. Both of these efforts fully align with the FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

Nearly 86% of the Approved Budget is targeted at instruction. Key budget highlights include funding for a 4% compensation increase for all employees; maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students; and expanding athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2024-25 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2023-24 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.
