Good afternoon families!!
I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the long weekend. This past weekend is a very special weekend, particularly with our community and the number of military connected families we have. Memorial Day is an important day for us, as citizens and residents of the United States, to remember and honor all of the great men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. The cost they paid is devastating to the families that are left behind and we owe it to them to remember what they sacrificed for us.
SOLs are over (mostly)!!! We have a few retakes that will be going on this week. Scores will be sent out soon and more information is located below in the bulletin. Classroom testing is nearly complete in the primary grades and those test results will be shared with families at the end of the year as well!
This week we have PTA Bingo night on Wednesday (tomorrow), from 7:00-8:00 in the cafeteria. Next week we feature a new event here at Cherry Run in celebrating our International Culture Week. We have a variety of events that we will host to share the differing cultures that make Cherry Run such a great place to learn and grow! We'll have a poster day, a cultural parade, an assembly, and an after-school event to share and learn about each other. I hope you will join us AND we are still looking for participants (more information is below!).
Have a great week!!
Sincerely,
Mark Bibbee
Principal

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student assessments, including what each assessment is testing for and how to interpret the test results. Caregivers should contact their children’s teacher with any testing questions.

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!
It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.
Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school year to receive that benefit. The application for the 2024-25 school year will be available this summer.
If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2023-24 school year. Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch.

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.
Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.
To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.
Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.
Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

- 🙋 Student Attendance and Engagement
During the Academic Matters segment of the November 9 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid discussed student attendance and engagement. Attendance and absenteeism rates are one measure for Goal 2 of our 2023-30 Strategic Plan.
Chronic absenteeism — which is defined as a student missing 10% or more of school for any reason — is a concern across Virginia school districts. Although FCPS continues to outperform the state average in attendance rates, we are tracking chronic absenteeism closely.
Data shows that:
- Missing just 10% of school — just two days a month — negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
- Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance.
- Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school.
- By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
Attendance is critical for academic success!
Missing School Over the Holidays
Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, please speak with your child’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work. However, a homework packet cannot make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom.
Visit FCPS’ website for more attendance resources.

Here we see students in Ms. Nindl's class. The students are participating in their 'book club' activities. Students are grouped together in small groups of four or five students and then assigned a book. Each group has a different book that they read. Students take turns reading from the book then participate in comprehension activities. Students then use graphic organizers to illustrate their ideas and then write about them. Students can then compare and contrast their ideas to help derive meaning from the books!

Today's staff spotlight focuses on Ms. Nindl. Ms. Nindl came to us from Groveton elementary school where she had worked for several years. She is an amazing language arts teacher and that is where her passion truly lies. In addition to being well versed in the Science of Reading (SoR), Ms. Nindl is trained in Orton Gillingham (OG) and multiple other Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions.
Ms. Nindl has already had a significant impact on our school supporting reading for the 4th grade team!
