Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

While you’d think things are really starting to wind down around here, there are some exciting events that really kept us happy and buzzing this week. On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of bringing back some of our former Stingers who will graduate from high school this year for our annual Marshall Senior Walk. They walked down the hallways as we applauded them, then they stuck around to help answer questions from our 6th graders, and some also stayed a little longer to say hello and thank you to some of the teachers that helped them along the way while in The Hive.

Incredible support from home and the community is how our Stingers thrive, and our families had several opportunities to come in and support us this week. 2nd grade invited families to reflect on the school year last Friday. 6th graders had their families come in to play some math games on Tuesday. Kindergartners wrote some Summer bucket lists with their families on Wednesday. And one of our 3rd grade grandfather’s came in on Thursday to talk all about Ancient Civilizations!

Today, a couple of fun Stenwood traditions took place. We weren’t sure as students arrived this morning if we were in Stenwood or Hollywood as we welcomed students on Red Carpet Day! Thanks to the SCA for this fun Spirit Day. And this morning, we saw our 5th and 6th grade classes battle it out in our Spring Battle of the Books. Students had fun showing off their knowledge of the selected books and their classes themed costumes, dances, and cheers. Thanks to all of the teachers and staff that make this such a fantastic event, especially our librarian Nancy Cole or our Master of Ceremonies Karen Roth!

Finally, it is also that time of year when it is time for some goodbyes (or in maybe more of a “Hope to see you later!”).  First is our wonderful staff who are retiring after MANY years of service to FCPS and Stenwood.  We will deeply miss Mrs. Fucile, Ms. Milton, and Ms. Collier with a combined 63 years of service to FCPS.  Mrs. Pasquel and Ms. Stankaitis are also relocating outside of FCPS, we have loved the short time they have been with us.  Congratulations to Ms. McCall (mini McCall as she is sometimes called) who will have her first classroom of her own next year at Annandale Terrace.  We also want to wish a farewell to Ms. Kim, one of our Enhanced Autism Instructional Assistants, we also said goodbye to another one of our Enhanced Autism Instructional Assistants Ms. Rohani earlier this month.

And with that, we look forward to everything our Stinger students, teachers, and families will pack into our last full week of school next week! Enjoy the wonderful weekend!

Google Workspace Information for Students and Parents

Is your child not returning to FCPS next year and wants to keep items from their FCPS Google Drive? Before their last day, they need to download these items.  Visit the Google Workspace Information for Students and Parents to learn how. Contact our SBTS, Jackie Krum, with any questions.

Stenwood Parent Book Club - Fall Book Pick

The Stenwood Family Book Club will be meeting again next fall. If you want to get ahead, we will be reading and discussing The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Please email Ms. Berick (tsberick@fcps.edu) and Ms. Wideman (cjwideman@fcps.edu) if you’d like to add your email to the distro list for information on meeting times and location.

Library News

Ms. Cole reports that we had over 25,000 books checked out this year!  That is amazing and it is true that Stingers are Readers!  However, all good things must come to an end, and Ms. Cole needs all library books returned as soon as possible.  If you are unsure if  your student has library books checked out, your student can log into Destiny Discover through Schoology and check their account. Overdue notices will be emailed later today. You may also check with Ms. Cole (nhcole@fcps.edu). If you can’t find your library  books, then you can pay for them via exact change or a check made payable to Stenwood ES. Please send the payment to the library.  Thank you for supporting the library and encouraging your students to read.

Lost & Found

Stenwood’s Lost and Found is overflowing.  As we have numerous events over the last few weeks, please stop by to check the lost and found.  Any unclaimed items will be donated on the last day of school.

Lost and Found

Health Room Notice

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than 2:00 pm, student dismissal time, on the last day of school, June 12th. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school.

Testing Results

Later this month, you will begin receiving your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, view this list of tests by grade level on FCPS’ website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be posted in SIS ParentVUE, or sent by mail or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student assessments, including what each assessment is testing for and how to interpret the test results. Caregivers should contact their children’s teacher with any testing questions.

New SOL Growth Reports for Grade 3-8 Tests Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) test results, along with other student data, help demonstrate in which subjects or topics students may need additional academic support.

In order to help interpret SOL results for parents, the Virginia Department of Education has released new Standards of Learning Growth Parent Reports for families of students who took grade 3-8 SOL math and reading tests this spring.

The Growth Parent Report ties together scores from fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) with the student’s current spring SOL results to show their trend in academic progress this year.

Learn how to understand your student’s grade 3-8 SOL results and find resources to support their ongoing learning.

Support Your Child’s Success in SIS ParentVUE Signing up for a SIS ParentVUE account helps you to support your child’s academic success. Caregivers can view important information in ParentVUE such as attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. A SIS ParentVUE app is available for Apple and Android devices.

Need help creating a SIS ParentVUE account? This video explains the steps. Find out more. To create a new account, please contact Stenwood’s registrar Sonja Hunt for an activation letter.

If you already have an account, be sure your contact information is up-to-date. Parents/guardians can update their phone numbers or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section. View more information
