Watch us grow! We are thrilled with how well our vegetables are growing in our new gardens throughout the courtyard and in the aquaponics pods.

Greetings, Irving Families!

It is hard to believe we are already heading into Memorial Day Weekend. Just like all other breaks and long weekends, we do not assign homework. We want our students and staff to enjoy their time. I have asked staff to step away from work and email so they may enjoy the time with family and friends. We hope you have a relaxing weekend.

When we return from the short break, we will be just 2 weeks away from our annual 8th grade celebration. We cannot hold the event without your assistance specifically we need your assistance with chaperoning and snacks/drinks donations. This event is for ALL of our 8th grade students. If you would be willing to chaperone the 8th grade Celebration, please complete this Chaperone Sign-up form. If you are willing to donate snacks or drinks, please make your donation selections through this Snack Donation Sign-up. If you would prefer to have snack items delivered from a site like Amazon- items may be sent to: Tiffany Cheatham, Irving MS 8th grade dance, 8100 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22191. For more details about the celebration, please see below.

Lastly, this weekend, please take a look around your homes for overdue library books, track & field jersey’s or maybe an extra laptop charger and place them in your child’s backpack for return on Tuesday. Speaking of returns - we would love to give back all the items in our Lost and Found to their rightful owners, please remind your child to take a look and take home items that belong to them.

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

8th Grade Celebration

Friday, June 7 from 6:00-8:00 pm

  • The purpose of this event is to have fun and celebrate one last time as a class before they head out for the summer and on to high school.
  • Only 8th grade students attending Irving Middle School may attend.
  • The 8th grade celebration is NOT a formal event
  • This event will be in our 7th grade gym and out on our tennis courts/black top (weather permitting). Students should be comfortable to dance, play games, and likely take a lot of pictures in our photo section with the horseman backdrop.
    • In previous years, students have worn a pair of slacks and a polo type shirt or a skirt/blouse or dress, again NO formal attire or high heels are required or recommended for this event (often high heels are taken off within about 5 minutes of arriving…).
  • Students often attend in groups, so having a “date” is NOT a requirement to attend.
  • We will be utilizing outdoor spaces for the event - fingers crossed for good weather!
  • We need volunteers to make this celebration a success - please see the link below to volunteer as a chaperone for the 8th Grade Celebration and/or donate snacks. Thank you in advance for helping us make this celebration a successful event for our students.

Library News

Parents, this week’s “Irving Says” poll asked students whether they’d like to sleep in a cave with a hibernating bear, or camp at the base of a dormant volcano.  Rest assured that most kids responded, “Neither!” before finally deciding to vote one way or another.  At the time of publication, the responses were tied!  Stay tuned next week for the exciting results!

Since 7th grade English classes will be having students submit book projects on May 31, we have extended our  due date to have all library books to be returned.  Students have received reminder notices this week about the books they have out, and many have been returned. We plan to send overdue notices over Memorial Day Weekend, with the hopes of students locating and packing up library books to be brought back after the long weekend.

Stay tuned for full details of Irving’s Summer READ! Program at the beginning of June.  This program will be for rising 7th and 8th grade students.
