Principal's Message

concert

Dear Shrevewood Families,

Today, we successfully concluded the remainder of our SOL retakes. We are incredibly proud of the dedication and hard work our students and staff have demonstrated throughout this process. Our scores reflect the collective effort and commitment of our entire school community.

We look forward to sharing a comprehensive overview of our end-of-year data at the upcoming PTA meeting next Monday. Your presence and support at this meeting are highly valued, as we celebrate our achievements as a school.

As we approach the end of the school year, we have a series of wonderful events to look forward to at Shrevewood including International Night, Field Day, 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony, and end of year class parties.

This is an exciting time of year, and we are eager to celebrate all that we have accomplished together. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.

Sincerely,

Joshua DeSmyter, Principal

Katie Vandawalker, Assistant Principal

Student Test Results Coming Soon

Later this month, you will begin receiving your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, view this list of tests by grade level on FCPS’ website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be posted in SIS ParentVUE, or sent by mail or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student assessments, including what each assessment is testing for and how to interpret the test results. Caregivers should contact their children’s teacher with any testing questions.

New SOL Growth Reports for Grade 3-8 Tests Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) test results, along with other student data, help demonstrate in which subjects or topics students may need additional academic support.

In order to help interpret SOL results for parents, the Virginia Department of Education has released new Standards of Learning Growth Parent Reports for families of students who took grade 3-8 SOL math and reading tests this spring.

The Growth Parent Report ties together scores from fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) with the student’s current spring SOL results to show their trend in academic progress this year.

Learn how to understand your student’s grade 3-8 SOL results and find resources to support their ongoing learning.

Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Prearranged Absences

Parents are encouraged to minimize student absences during school hours and to plan family trips and vacations during school holidays. If a student will be absent for more than one day, parents should submit a prearranged absence request, so teachers and administrators are alerted to the absence reasons and a plan to handle missed work is developed. Requests for prearranged absences for longer than one school day must be submitted to the school office within a reasonable time (three to five school days in advance) for the principal to review. Prearranged absence requests for periods longer than five school days must be reviewed to prevent student absences from becoming chronic and to avoid withdrawal from school. Student absences can have a significant impact on learning, and priority must be given to ensure that students attend school regularly.

Change in Transportation Protocol

If playdates are planned, the Shrevewood office team must receive notifications from the parents of all students involved.  Playdate notifications may be made via the online Change in Transportation Form or via an email sent to SWESOffice@fcps.edu. For any changes in transportation, please make sure to contact the office no later 3:00 pm.

Procedures when you come to join your children for lunch:

  • Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
  • Using a government issued photo ID, you must sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
  • Please ensure you are wearing the visitor sticker at all times.
  • Report directly to the cafeteria.
  • Enjoy lunch with your children.
  • Return to the main office to check-out using your sticker.
  • Lunch visitors should not go to the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue for our students.
  • We ask that you not bring fast food for lunch.
  • Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children, due to safety protocols and allergies.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your student succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when you should keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, please notify his/her teacher, so assistance can be provided if needed. Please contact us as soon as you know your child will be absent.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.
