Hello, Springfield District

In response to a recent newsletter sent by one of my colleagues, I want to share a little more about what’s happening with the School Board’s review of the FCPS Boundary Policy (Policy 8130). Thank you to those who have engaged in communication with me.

The School Board’s Governance Committee is currently updating Policy 8130 as part of a regular review of policies that the Board conducts. The review is designed to address concerns about overcrowding, temporary classrooms and trailers, transportation times, facility renovation timelines, and possibly instructional program locations. The work related to the review of this policy has been going on for many years. It is simply a roadmap for the Superintendent to use when she presents potential future boundary changes. You may review the documents from the most recent Governance Committee meeting on BoardDocs. Please know that all existing versions of the policy are just working drafts. The Governance Committee will meet to continue the work on updating Policy 8130 on June 18, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. The meeting is open to the public at the Gatehouse Administration Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, VA.

Until then, I want to share more about the steps that the Board will take. After the Governance Committee is finished with its draft, the next step will be to discuss the proposed changes. This will take place with the entire Board at a work session; a working meeting in which the community does not participate but is welcome to attend either in person or view live from the FCPS website or School Board YouTube Channel. Depending on the outcome of the work session, the updated policy could then be brought for a vote by the School Board at a regular meeting or sent back to the Governance Committee for further review. Regular meetings are also open to the public and take place at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA.  Community members are welcome to speak

Whatever the timeline or the path forward, I know that all the School Board members feel strongly about keeping the public informed. I will continue to keep you updated on the Board’s work regarding the Policy 8130 review in my monthly newsletters. Additionally, I feel confident that robust community engagement will be required by the revised policy.

For now, please see and continue to check the FCPS website for current information. You may also find more information about School Board meetings on our website and follow our work on the 2023-2024 School Board Annual Work Calendar. The calendar is continually updated as our Chair and Committee Chairs set the schedule for our work.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Sandy Anderson
