Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

It is hard to believe that the 2023-24 school year will be coming to a close in just fourteen school days! We are extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that our Cubbies have shown throughout the school year and during this testing season.

Our PTA hosted an outstanding spring fling event last weekend! It was wonderful to be able to come together as a school community and celebrate a fantastic year. Thank you to our PTA and our parents and volunteers who planned and organized such an incredible event. We appreciate your efforts!

We have many exciting events coming up to honor the work and talents of our Cubbies. Please see the event dates in Upcoming Dates or our end of year dates included below. We look forward to seeing you to celebrate our Cubbies and this excellent school year!

Band & Strings Concert Update

Due to a conflict with Stone Middle School's 8th grade promotion ceremony, Cub Run's Band and Strings concert will now be held on the same evening as our chorus concert, Monday, June 3rd. Specific times for each concert will be shared soon!

Senior Grad Walk - June 3

We invite our former Cub Run Cubbies to the Senior Grad Walk on June 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM. Wear your cap and gown and be celebrated by our current Cubbies. Please meet us in the front lobby/main entrance at door #1. Parents are welcome to join us and watch their seniors parade through the school.


Field Day!

On the morning of Tuesday, June 4 the Physical Education Department at Cub Run will be hosting our annual Field Day. Field Day is open to students at all grade levels. The sixth graders will be hosting and running the stations for us this year, but they need some support from adult volunteers!

We are hoping for an overflow of community support during Field Day. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at 9am, and the plan will be to assist with their child’s class as they move from station to station. Volunteers will be responsible for helping their child’s teacher with group support and cleanup.

Cleanup should be over by 11am.

If you’re interested in helping make our Field Day a big success, please send an email to your child’s classroom teacher. If you have any questions, please call Mr. D or Ms. Capri at 703 633 7559.

We are anticipating a day of fun, physical activity, and camaraderie for all of the Cub Run community and would love for you to be a part of
it!

Medication Pick-up Reminder

All medications currently in the Cub Run Health Room need to be picked up by a parent/guardian on or before dismissal on the last day of school. For safety reasons, medicine will not be sent home with students nor kept by the school from one school year to the next. Any medication not picked up by 1:30pm on June 12th will be discarded. For additional information, please call the Health Room.

Chronic Absenteeism - State Board SOA Decision

Last school year, the Virginia Board of Education decided to not suspend chronic absenteeism as part of school accreditation determinations. The Board’s rationale was a desire to send a strong message to schools, families, and students about the importance of regular attendance for student success. The Board decision means that schools with Level 3 (red) in any indicator—including chronic absenteeism—based on end-of-year data will receive “Accredited with Conditions” designation. 

Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10%.

As of May 22, Cub Run's absenteeism rate is at 9.6%. We appreciate your partnership. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can join our Westfield pyramid schools for having an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.  

REQUEST FOR PRE ARRANGED ABSENCE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

FCPS Excused absences include the following reasons: illness, injury, funeral, legal obligations, medical procedures, religious observances, deployment-related absences, or family emergency.

If the reason for this prearranged absence is different from the above, please indicate the reason for the absence. Parents must plan to arrange for their child to complete make-up work, tests, or projects. If the student's planned absences exceed five school days, a parent conference may be required. The conference will include a review of the student's academic and absence record. Students who are absent 15 or more consecutive school days will be withdrawn from enrollment.

Cub Run Elementary School is committed to providing our students with a high quality education.  Academic success relies upon excellent school attendance.  Children who come to school on time every day are building critical life skills they will use throughout the rest of their lives.  Like strengthening a muscle, building positive attendance habits early on make a difference for our children today and for our adults of tomorrow.  Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves.  Cub Run is teaming up with the other 9 schools in the Westfield Pyramid in an effort to make sure all of our students are in school, on time, each day.

Did you know?

  • Regular school attendance in grades preschool through grade 6 makes it more likely that your child will read on grade level. 
  • The 2024-25 school year calendar has been published and we highly recommend scheduling vacations around the school year calendar.  We have pasted the link below for your convenience:

  • Even excused absences interfere with learning.
  • A pattern of absences (whether unexcused or excused) is one of the main reasons children have lower academic achievement.  
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Absences can mask deeper struggles. For example; absences may be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, he or she may be struggling with school work or peer relationships, or possibly facing a medical or mental health concern.

Kindergarten Registration

If you have a rising kindergarten student (5 years old by 09/30/2024), K-Registration is now open for the 2024-2025 school year.

K-Registration will be open by appointments only during school hours all day on April 1st (Student Holiday) and between 10 am- 2:30 pm during regular school days.  Please contact our Student Information Assistant (SIA) Mrs. Namrata Saxena  to set up an appointment. You can also reach her at 703-633-7500.

When you register your student, you will be added to a rising kindergarten email distribution list. We will contact you with information about our upcoming kindergarten orientation!

The following documents are required for registration:

  • Proof of residency(Minimum 2) : A deed or lease agreement, Any mail with address
  • Proof of birth: Original birth certificate
  • Health documentation: A certificate of physical examination including required screenings completed within the last 12 months prior to starting school by a licensed physician.
  • Immunization records: Up-to-date records in accordance with the child's age
  • A valid ID

Registration packets are available online or can be picked up in the front office.

When registering, parents will create (or log in to an existing) SIS ParentVUE account. Please note that passwords should be more than 12 characters long. If you have an existing account and your password is shorter, please update it when you log in.

Community Conversations

Dr. Michelle Reid has been hosting Community Conversations and Employee Conversations  throughout the division since the fall of this school year. She is committed to getting to know our school communities. 

The dates for the final two Community Conversations are below. These events provide a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to connect with Dr. Reid, share concerns and ideas. She is there to listen and answer your questions. Your voice is important.

We invite you to register for one of the last two community conversations of the school year. Please register for a time and place that is convenient for you. Pre-registration is not required, but does help us plan. Upcoming Community Conversations:

Summer Extravaganza

Enjoy Learning, Fun, and Helpful Information at the Extravaganza! 

Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., for the FCPS Summer Extravaganza! Families are invited to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth. In addition to learning activities, enjoy tips and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Register Today for FCPS Summer Camps

Registration for FCPS Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA/E-IFTA) camps closes on Friday, June 7. Tuition is waived for students eligible for free and reduced-price meals. Bus transportation is available from select FCPS high schools and middle schools.
