Library Books Deadline

All library books were due back on May 31st.  Overdue notices were sent home last week.  Please take time to find any missing books and return as soon as possible.  If you cannot find the books, please send in the payment so we can replace the book for the students to read next year. 😊

Girls on the Run at Woodley Hills Elementary

photo

This year, Woodley Hills Elementary joined many other surrounding schools in offering Girls on the Run to third through six grade students. Our school principal, Mrs. Aldredge, secured a sponsor for this after school club so that there was no cost to any participant. The generous sponsor was Mr. CJ Cross, owner of Chalkboard Wings & BBQ on Cooper Road in Alexandria.

The Girls on the Run program is an “evidence-based program that inspires participants to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, imagine their possibilities, and confidently stand up for themselves and others.”  This season we were excited that a total of thirteen girls participated. The Girls on the Run curriculum included a total of twenty structured sessions focusing on team building, leadership development, recognizing and celebrating individual strengths, motivation and much more. Each session also included warm up exercises to build strength, at least two games designed to increase physical stamina, and 25 minutes of jogging, walking, and/or running. One session also provided an opportunity for the girls to do a community service activity. They decided that they wanted to beautify their school playground area by collecting trash and create thank you cards for Mr. Cross. The last session was a practice run that prepared the girls for the culminating event, a 5K in Pentagon City. We were thankful that we were able to use Title I funding to pay for a bus for our girls and their families to attend.

Along with dozens of Girls on the Run participants from other area schools, the girls completed the 5K and received their medal at the finish line.

Beyond helping the participants set as well meet and exceed their individual goals, the Girls on the Run program encouraged healthy habits that will hopefully last a lifetime and allowed the girls to build meaningful connections with others.

Thank you so much to Ms. Karen Thompson, Ms. Ally Kramer and Ms. Julia Camacho for coaching and support the girls this year!

Kidergarten Registration

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Please contact our registrar, Sandra Guzman  at 703-799-2000 to make an appointment.
