Spring SOL Test Information

.

Herndon High School students will be taking one or more Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments between April 29, 2024 and May 31, 2024. All students will receive their testing schedule and other important information via school E-Mail in the middle of April 2024. All testing times start at 8:10 AM.

The testing days have been expanded this year due to the AP testing that is also scheduled during the same testing window and student testing must ensure that proper spacing and time is provided for all tests. On certain days, the bell schedule will be rotated to ensure that instructional time is maintained for all students testing. The table below lists the testing days and the schedule run that day:

  • Monday, May 20, 2024 - Algebra 1 SOL Test - Periods TA, ST5, 8, 6, 2
  • Tuesday, May 21, 2024 - Algebra 1 SOL Test - Periods 1, 7, 5, 3
  • Wednesday, May 22, 2024 - Algebra 2 SOL Test - Regular Black Day Bell Schedule
  • Thursday, May 23, 2024 - Algebra 2 SOL Test - Regular Red Day Bell Schedule
  • Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - Reading SOL Test Expedited Retake and Make-Up Tests - Regular Red Day Bell Schedule
  • Wednesday, May 29, 2024 - All Science SOL Expedited Retake and Make-up Tests - Regular Black Day Bell Schedule
  • Thursday, May 30, 2024 - All Math SOL Expedited Retake and Make-Up Tests - Regular Red Day Bell Schedule
  • Friday, May 31, 2024 - All SOL Expedited Retake and Make-up Tests (as needed) - Regular Black Day Bell Schedule

All students received their SOL testing schedules through their school E-Mail accounts on April 16, 2024.

While further information on testing can be found on the Herndon High School Website, all SOL assessments are taken in-person at school. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your student missing a testing day, or have further questions about SOL testing, please notify your student’s school counselor or our Assessment Coach, Dr. Karl Gussow.

Yearbook Pickup

.

Yearbook distribution starts on May 20th until May 31st! You can pickup/buy yearbooks during BLACK DAY during ALL LUNCHES as well as during after school on WED/THURS until MAY 31st by the concession stand!

This year, we are requiring PHOTO ID (school ID, license, etc.). Don’t have one? Get one printed from the main office!

Books not picked up by May 30th can be picked up before/after school OR during any 3rd or 8th period in room B127. If you come during any other period, Ms. Kim will be teaching and will NOT be able to hand you your book.

Can’t make these dates? Email Ms. Kim at jkim12@fcps.edu

Reminder: all online orders close on Sunday, May 19th. Purchases after the 19th must be done in person via order forms in the main office. Books are $80, cash or check (payable to Herndon High School). Students on Free/Reduced Lunch must purchase in person through the main office and get their order forms signed.

Sports Physicals

.

Herndon High School will be hosting their Sports Physicals on Monday, May 20th. Take advantage and cross this off your to do list for next year now while supporting the Athletic Training program! The physicals currently on file expire on June 30th, a new physical is needed for next year. After June 30th, students will not be permitted to participate in any team related activities (other than interest meetings) until a new VHSL physical form has been submitted. You are always welcome to get a sports physical through your family physician or an urgent care center, but this event is our Athletic Training Program’s only fundraiser.

Did you know? This is an incredibly important night for us because FCPS only provides the athletic training personnel, not the supplies we need to help your kids. The money earned is used to purchase the supplies that allow us to help our student-athletes stay healthy and play to their highest potential. Every piece of gauze, glove, roll of tape, ice bag, bandage, nose plug, brace, crutch…everything you see us use is purchased through the funds earned at this annual event. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. Just for reference- 1 physical does not even cover the cost of 1 case of tape (we go through 80-100 cases per year).

Physicals are $50- payable by cash or check on site or pre-paid through MySchoolBucks prior to the event. All details will be provided in a confirmation email when appointments are made. Additional donations or ‘sponsorships’ for student-athletes who may not be able to afford this opportunity are always welcome. We ensure forms are complete and there are no issues (unless a doctor notices something that warrants further medical attention). All forms will be put on file so kids are ready to go- you’ll just need to complete online registration for whatever activity they choose.

Click here to make an appointment: 2024 Athletic Physical RegistrationYou will receive a confirmation email within 48 business hours of scheduling.

Any questions, comments, or concerns? Please contact Lisa Petruzzi (LTPetruzzi@fcps.edu).

From the Library

The end of the school year marks a time to account for library books that students have enjoyed this year. Here are dates to note:

  • All senior library materials are now due. School accounts, including any outstanding library obligations for lost or damaged books, must be settled before cap and gown distribution. Seniors can speak with a librarian if they have questions about their account.
  • Wednesday, May 29: all library materials from freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are due. This date applies for all FCPS schools.
  • Monday, June 3: students who will return to Herndon High School in the fall and whose library accounts are clear may check out books for the summer. These books can be returned during the first week of school in August.

Between June 12 and August 18, Fairfax County Public Library is offering their summer reading program. This program depends on student volunteers. If your student is interested in accruing service hours at Herndon Fortnightly Library, they can find out more at one of the required orientation sessions (Tuesday, May 21 or Saturday, June 1). To register for the orientation sessions or to find out about Herndon Fortnightly’s programs for teens, visit their calendar here.

The Herndon HS library welcomes students before school, after school, and during the school day with a pass. Students looking for a lunch option other than the cafeteria can often get a pass to spend their lunch block in the library. If we can answer any questions for you, please contact us at hhs_library@fcps.edu.

Colleges and Universities Still Accepting Applications

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has released their annual list of colleges and universities that are still accepting applications from prospective freshmen or transfer students for the fall of 2023. Students and families are encouraged to use this tool to search colleges that still have space available. Users may narrow down the list of schools by state and view whether a school still has financial aid, as well as unfilled housing.

Additionally, NACAC has created an enrollment deposit fee waiver request form, considered by some institutions, for students experiencing significant financial hardship. Families can learn more about the enrollment deposit fee waiver and eligibility on the NACAC website. It is recommended that students and families contact their school counselor or college and career specialist with any questions.Students who still need assistance applying for the FAFSA or VASA (financial aid forms) can schedule a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org. All FAFSA or VASA help that your school or College Access Fairfax provides is free.
