Greetings, Irving Families!
What an amazing week! Thank you so much to the students and families, for recognizing our staff members this week. The PTA was outstanding in their support from Breakfast on Monday, cookies from Swiss Bakery on Wednesday, to lunch from Cafe Rio today- our staff felt appreciated all week! I also want to thank families for sending notes and positive emails, we know they take time to write and we greatly appreciate them. If you would like to recognize a staff member any time throughout the year, please consider utilizing the FCPS Cares website.
Speaking of recognition, I would like to give a big Thank You to our community! Tuesday evening, we held our annual Heritage Night and the turnout was amazing. The performances were outstanding, the Henna was beautiful, and the share fair, public library, and authors were so informative! Thank you to all the WIMS staff, families, community members and businesses who helped make Heritage Night a HUGE success! A special Thank You to the following local restaurants who donated food:
Kumo Asian Bistro - Alexandria, VA
Mediterranean Gourmet Market - Alexandria, VA
El Paso Mexican Restaurant - Springfield, VA
Milano’s - Springfield, VA
Village Chicken - Springfield, VA
Anita’s New Style Mexican Food - Springfield, VA
Hard Times Café - Springfield, VA
Lassan Indian - Burke, VA
We look forward to continuing our learning about other cultures through a series of videos coming soon! Stay tuned!
Lastly, below is a special message from our PTA. Please take a look and if you are willing to serve in one of the roles, please reach out. Without the President and Secretary, we cannot have a PTA.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Take Care!

Greetings Irving Families!
The PTA is seeking nominees for next year's PTA Board - President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President! The current board members are due to end their terms this year. There is currently 1 nominee for Treasurer.
The positions are open to anyone with a current or incoming student at Irving.
To maintain an active PTA, the PTA Board must have a President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Without a PTA Board, there is no PTA, and by the Virginia PTA rules, the PTA will be dissolved and all funds collected by the Virginia PTA.
The PTA supports students, teachers, and staff in multiple ways:
- Irving Spirit Wear is sold by the PTA;
- Regular Staff Appreciation Events are hosted by the PTA;
- Restaurant / Spirit nights are coordinated by the PTA;
- Teacher Grants are funded by the PTA; and
- School capital improvements, field trips, and the 8th grade dance are financially supported by PTA dollars.
Elections will be held at the May 14th meeting (5/14, 6-715pm, via Zoom, see PTA website for the Zoom link - https://irvingms.memberhub.com/ (copy & paste)
Nominations will be accepted "from the floor" (during the meeting) or via email: irvingptanomcommittee@gmail.com.
For any questions or just to chat about the position responsibilities, please don't hesitate to email: irvingmspta@gmail.com. (or the position descriptions are in the PTA bylaws here - https://tinyurl.com/Irving-PTA-Bylaws - (copy & paste)
(and if you know any rising 7th grade parents that might be interested, please forward this to them!)
Thank you for your continued support

Dear Parent or Guardian:
The school clinic is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time (12:15pm) on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.
Thank you Julie Peter RN BSN

While working this puzzle, students could review some of the many odd idioms that are a part of our English language. Solving it was a “piece of cake” for our sharp students! We are still open to receiving donations of any 500-1000 piece puzzles that you might be finished with at home.
Students have continued to share their opinions in our weekly “Irving Says” polls. This week they weighed in on whether they’d rather “eat breakfast foods every meal forever,” or “never eat breakfast foods again,” with the latter option having the lead at the time of publication. And, last week, 60% of those polled said that they’d rather “receive an academic scholarship to the college of their choice,” while only 40% would rather “sign a contract to play their sport at a Division-1 college.”
The library was one of many sites that the community could visit during Tuesday’s Heritage Night. Many of the tri-fold exhibits that were on display on Tuesday are now showcased in the library for students and staff to see.
WIth the end of the year comes both the testing season and the push to get library materials returned. While we encourage every student to have a good book on hand to read while waiting for others to finish testing, we are also beginning to remind students of their need to return overdue library books. Hopefully the students will take care of this before we need to inform parents!
