Some staff enjoying their new Fairfax Villa merch thanks to our PTA!

1.Principal’s Message

Dear Families,

It has been a celebratory week!  On Monday our generous Parent Teacher Association (PTA) kicked off Teacher Appreciation Week by recognizing the united efforts of our entire staff. Fairfax Villa turned into The Greatest Show filled with games, prizes, breakfast, snacks, and new Fairfax Villa Swag! It felt great to be spoiled! We cannot thank the PTA enough for their celebrations of our staff.

Although our entire PTA is not photographed below, we say thank you!

In addition to teacher appreciation week, our fourth grade classrooms stayed busy! Fourth grade took a trip to George Mason’s home, Gunston Hall! They explored what life was like for various groups of people living in Colonial Virginia. They also showed off their sea creature exhibit! Afterschool, Get2Green met to work on their garden bed project and our running club got together for some activity!

It is always a busy week here at the Villa! We are currently taking state assessments, the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests for Math in grades 3-6.  Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats breakfast, and charges their laptop to prepare for testing.

Sincerely,

Shelia Sobeski

Interim Principal

2.☀️ Save the Date for FCPS’ Summer Extravaganza

Don’t miss a day of family fun and learning at the FCPS Summer Extravaganza!

Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., where students will be able to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.

Representatives from local businesses, Fairfax County Public Library, and the Fairfax County Park Authority are participating in the Summer Extravaganza. Community organizations, such as Neighborhood Community Services, will be at the event as well. All will have learning activities, tips, and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Visit the Summer Extravaganza webpage for more details and register to attend. Registration is not required, but it's helpful for planning purposes.

3.Parent Input Form for 2024-2025 Class Placement

With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are already looking ahead to next year. While we look at class placements for the coming year, we want you to be aware of the process. We place students in classrooms based on numerous criteria. Students are grouped so that classrooms are heterogeneous, having a balance of boys and girls, a balance of academic performance and ability, and groups that will allow for the greatest support from our resource teachers.

Classroom teachers will have input into the recommendations for next year, as will our counselors and specialists. Our staff has been told that we will not take requests for particular teachers because we base our placement on instructional criteria and individual student strengths and needs. It is unfair to give special consideration to some parents when it would be impossible to grant requests from all parents. Please be aware also that grade level assignments for staff sometimes change, due to late enrollments or other changes.  Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer. Our staff has been directed not to give out information about placement prior to that time. Children and parents are disappointed when changes must be made due to staffing issues.

In addition, we also value parent input.  If you feel there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, you may submit your input by clicking on this Parent Input Google Form . The parent input forms are due by May 24, 2024.  We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs. Taken together with teacher input, your feedback informs class placements.

6.💪 Let's Finish the School Year Strong!

1

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:

  • Check your child’s attendance record.
  • Help your student stay engaged at school.
  • Report future absences.
  • Understand the FCPS school calendar.

Learn more about attendance resources.

7.🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

2

Fairfax County Health Department is offering Immunization Clinics on May 9, from 4 - 8 pm at the Annandale location and May 16, from 4 - 8 pm at the Mt. Vernon location.
