 Our kindergarten students did a fantastic job with their animal habitat presentations this week. We are so proud of how they showcased their learning!
 Bike to School Day was a huge success! Nearly 50 students joined us for the Bike Bus this week, and even more rode their bikes to school. It was a wonderful way to start our school day!
Dear CWES Families,
It was a busy week at CWES! Students have started their SOL testing, which will continue over the next few weeks. We are extremely proud of their hard work. On Wednesday, we celebrated Bike to School Day. As you can see from the picture above, we had quite the turnout! Thanks to Safe Routes to School, we will be getting another bike rack to accommodate all of our student's bikes. Please make sure your child brings a lock and locks their bike every day.
Teacher Appreciation Week may have come to an end, but our gratitude towards our teachers remains unwavering. This past week served as a delightful reminder of the tremendous impact our teachers have on the lives of our students. They consistently inspire, challenge, and nurture them on a daily basis, and the growth and success of our students would not be achievable without their dedication and passion. We are thankful for the outstanding staff members at CWES who contribute to making it such a special and nurturing environment. Our heartfelt thanks go out to our PTA and all the families who joined us in celebrating our teachers this week! Your support in honoring our exceptional staff is truly appreciated.

Each year, a team consisting of classroom teachers, special education teachers, administrators, specialists, and counselors come together to collaborate and provide feedback on the formation of class groupings. This is a comprehensive and cooperative process. We greatly appreciate your input regarding your child's learning needs. It's important to note that our staff is exceptional, and we kindly ask that you refrain from mentioning specific teacher names on this form.
Please rest assured that all forms will be carefully reviewed by our administration and teachers. While we strive to take all factors into account when determining class placements, we may not be able to fulfill every request. However, please know that all information provided will be taken into consideration as we make decisions about placement.
For your input to be considered, we kindly request that this form be completed and submitted by Friday, May 17, 2024.
Please note that staff grade level assignments may occasionally change as a result of late enrollments or other unforeseen circumstances. Staff assignments will be finalized in August.
It is with great excitement that we invite you to join us for Field Day on Friday, June 7th!
Grades 4-6 will be in the morning from 9:50-11:50.
Grades K-3 will be in the afternoon from 1:30-3:30.

On Field Day, please be sure your child:
- Brings a labeled water bottle.
- Applies sunscreen before coming to school.
- Wears comfortable clothes and shoes.
- Comes with a positive attitude.

FCPS 2025 Budget — What’s Happening NextThe next steps in FCPS’ budget process are:

Tuesday, May 14: The School Board holds a public hearing on the budget. Register to speak by 6:30 p.m., on Monday, May 13.

Wednesday, May 15: Second day of School Board public hearings, if needed.

Tuesday, May 21: School Board budget work session.

Thursday, May 23: School Board adopts FCPS’ approved budget.

This Spring, our third through fifth graders will take the Virginia Standards of Learning Assessment. See below for the specific test dates and do your best to avoid scheduling appointments for your student on those days. If you have questions, reach out to Mindy Milliron and Kristi McGeehan, School Testing Coordinators.
Spring 24 SOL Dates
There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:
- Determine eligibility.
- Identify your local school.
- Gather documents.
- Fill out forms.
- Schedule an appointment. Please contact Amy Decatur, our Student Information Assistant, by email at aldecatur@fcps.edu or by phone at 703-764-5600 to set up an appointment
We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.
Attend a forum to hear about adolescent sleep research from an expert, learn about FCPS’ ongoing middle school start times study, and participate in small group discussions. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Breakout sessions will be held for middle school students to share their voices. Students are encouraged to attend!

While registration is not required, it does help with planning. Language interpretation and childcare will be provided. Learn more about the project exploring middle school start times.
Don’t miss a day of family fun and learning at the FCPS Summer Extravaganza!
Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., where students will be able to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.
Representatives from local businesses, Fairfax County Public Library, and the Fairfax County Park Authority are participating in the Summer Extravaganza. Community organizations, such as Neighborhood Community Services, will be at the event as well. All will have learning activities, tips, and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:
