Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week

Thank you so much to our AMAZING PTA for the breakfast, lunch, treats, gift cards, kind words, flowers, and more!  Thank you also to the 6th Grade Class of 2023 for the Frothy Mug truck!  We all feel so very fortunate to work at a school with such supportive parents!

art show

Thank you to our amazing art teachers, Mrs. Gleason and Mrs. Georgacopoulos!  The Oakton Pyramid Art Show this week at OHS highlighted student art from our school as well as other schools in our pyramid.  Students were so proud to show off their beautiful creations to all who attended.

Helping Hands Award

Each year, the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna honors a 6th grade student from each school in the Oakton/Vienna community, whose actions on behalf of her/his class, school, or community, embody the tenet of Optimist International: “giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world.”

OES was proud to nominate Thomas for this recognition! Thomas was elected as our SCA President this year on a platform of support for our school's Autism community. In addition to demonstrating leadership both in the classroom and as an SCA officer at weekly meetings, he has maintained his commitment by supporting students in our youngest Enhanced Autism classroom each week on Friday afternoons and as a PE Buddy during their PE time.  Thomas also volunteers his time daily to run our Panther TV morning show.  He is consistently kind and helpful; he is a supportive friend to his peers, and is a role model for all of our students.

OES will receive a $300.00 donation from the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna in honor of Thomas' outstanding service.

2024-2025 Class Assignments

At Oakton, we strive for healthy, heterogeneous student enrollment in each classroom. We have a process in place whereby teachers, specialists, and administrators confer with grade level teams to make recommendations that will result in a well-balanced classroom.  These settings include a broad range of academic levels, behavioral characteristics, and learning styles.  Teacher styles are also taken into consideration when completing teacher assignments.

To further outline the process, there are eight areas used in the determination of class assignments.  These include:

  • Heterogeneous groupings
  • Gender balance
  • Balance of special needs
  • Peer interactions
  • Special services
  • Learning environment
  • Health and medical concerns
  • Equitable distribution of students

These criteria play a role in the final decision for assignment. While parent input is welcomed, a request for an individual teacher cannot be granted.  Assigning students is a complex and educational process that we take seriously. We have developed procedures to best match students with classroom settings and teachers.

Parents are welcome to share information about their child here. All input must be shared via the google form by Monday, May 13.  We will only be using this document when we create classes, emails will not be considered.
