Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Dear Parents,

I hope this message finds you well and filled with the warmth of spring as we move through another exciting chapter of the school year. I have a lot of celebratory and informative information to share with you as we continue to work together in support of our students' growth and success.

Upcoming Opportunities

As we near the end of another school year, I want to extend a warm invitation to our final Parent Advisory Council meeting this Wednesday, May 15, at 6:00pm in the library. Parental input and involvement in these meetings have been invaluable throughout the year, contributing greatly to our shared goals of enhancing the educational experience for all our students. However, to ensure meaningful discussions and effective decision-making, I kindly request the participation of a minimum of five parents. Should we fail to meet this minimum requirement, regrettably, we will have to cancel this final meeting and reconvene next year. Your presence and insights are highly valued, and I sincerely hope to see many of you there.

Remarkable Recognitions!

Theater: Bravo to our sensational theater stars! Our performance of Singin’ in the Rain was nominated for “Best Musical” for The Jimmy Awards and our students will be performing at The National Theatre on Saturday, May 25th! Natalie Beasley was also nominated for Best Actress! This is one of the most competitive theatre events and we are honored to be nominated and get to perform! Their stellar performance has truly stolen the show and left us all applauding in awe.

Lucky enough to catch the May 10th spectacle, these outstanding performers left the crowd buzzing with excitement! While we stuck to our 'no pictures during the show' rule, I managed to snap some shots pre and post-performance. As an added feature, Senior Night was also celebrated, with all Actors/Actresses, Stage Crew, and Tech Support taking to the front of the stage. Bravo, Stallion stars! Your talent truly shines.

Also, Parker Bryant, Noah Pflugrath, and Zach Smith were nominated for Cappies awards for their performances in Much Ado About Nothing. Here are their specific areas of nomination: Noah for supporting actor in a play, Zach for comic actor in a play, Parker for lead actor in a play. To all of our SoCo Theater students, your talent shines brighter than any spotlight!

3

Teacher Appreciation Week: I would like to thank several groups for their involvement in recognizing our teachers and staff for this week’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. A special thanks to our SGA, lead by Mrs. Kelley Peck, for the week-long theme and gifts around Under the Big Top. They hosted everything from breakfast to popcorn stations to beautiful decorations and messages throughout the school.

I also want to highlight our PTSO, who sponsored a delicious luncheon on Thursday! Staff LOVED the meal and the candy bags that they could leave with.

Finally, I’d like to thank Bai-lee Therapeutic Massage for donating free, 10-minute shoulder massages to our staff.

Technology Student Association: We have new State Champions in Robotics! Last weekend, 19 South County High School students from the TSA competed at the state competition in Hampton, Virginia. South County entered 7 out of 40 possible events. Junaid Abdulhamid and Faith Mekonen placed in the top ten for Forensic Science, while Satvi Desai and Tesfai Tecle did the same for Data Science and Analytics. Finally, the VEX Robotics team, consisting of Ayaan Shaikh, James (Sungu) Malloy, Ryan Dang, Nola Gerold, Kayla Blosser, Taha Nasir, and Nathan Park took home 1st place! Your hard work, dedication, and innovative spirit have truly paid off, and we couldn't be prouder of your achievement.

Inspirational Stallions: This week, we hosted our first-ever Stallion Inspiration awards. Six students were recognized for either overcoming adversity or displaying exceptional citizenship during their time at SoCo. Following the awarding of their individual recognitions, each students had the opportunity to share who their most inspirational SCHS staff members were. Congratulations to all of these deserving Stallions!

Excelling in Athletics:

The Boys Soccer team celebrated Senior Night this week. They impressed me with their high level of speed, strength, and athleticism throughout the game. Their season has been nothing short of goal-tastic! Keep kicking it with that winning spirit! Congratulations on a successful season, team!

While at this game, I had the pleasure of sitting with the Hyun family as they regularly cheered for various players. Sitting with Mr. Hyun, himself a soccer coach, helped me learn so much of the ins and outs of the game. Thank you for the lessons, Mr. Hyun! You’re an excellent teacher!

Row-mendous news! Our crew team has paddled their way to an incredible achievement, clinching third place in the State competition! Their performance has made waves of pride throughout our school community. Remember that oar-dinary becomes extraordinary with your passion and effort. Congratulations on this fantastic accomplishment!

Silver Jubilee: It was a privilege to attend the 25th anniversary celebration of the Durga Temple recently. This marked my inaugural visit to a Hindu Temple, and I was deeply moved by the warmth and hospitality extended by everyone present. The experience was enlightening as I was graciously immersed in the rich traditions and beliefs of the Hindu faith. Each interaction offered valuable insights into the customs and practices that form the foundation of this vibrant community.

A heartfelt appreciation goes to Saurabh Thakrar, whose guidance and hospitality made my visit truly memorable. His personal tour shed light on the various facets of the Temple, enriching my understanding of its significance. The presence of such kind-hearted individuals like Saurabh and the entire community exemplifies the inclusivity and diversity that enriches the fabric of our Lorton community.

Principal Pioneers:

I had the great joy of having three students shadow me for a day in our second “Principal for the Day” activity. These three student leaders, Julia Qu, Faith Mckenon, and Elena Garcia, dressed the part in their business suits as we walked the halls and discussed leadership ideas and experiences. I enjoyed learning with and from these young leaders for a full day. With students like these leading the way, I feel confident that our future is bright at SoCo! I forgot to get their picture day one, so here are my future principals the next day.
