Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman Families!
The All Night Grad Party (formerly known as the Cav Cruise) is an event that was started in Fairfax County to keep graduating seniors safe in a “lock-in” all night, drug and alcohol free event. Since the start of these parties in the 1980s, there have been no student deaths associated with FCPS all night grad parties. But we need your help! Senior parents want to host out of town visitors to celebrate their students’ graduation. It is a Woodson tradition that underclass parents “pay it forward” and volunteer to support the All Night Grad Party–your students will benefit from this when they are graduating! Please sign up here to help us make this special event happen–it is a really fun night! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B4AA8AC2FA7FBC16-49334345-allnight

Varsity Softball:
Monday Night’s home game against Fairfax was The Last Rodeo for 6 amazing girls. Claire Warden and Emma Fleming will continue to play softball in college. The Cavs won 8-4. Claire Warden was in the circle striking out 9. Elle Foglio and Syd Huffman each collected two hits for the team. Penny Elliot provided pop in the middle of the lineup and led them with three runs batted in. Woodson Cavaliers didn't commit a single error in the field.
Strong hitting was not enough Friday night as Woodson fell to South County Stallions 2-0. Delaney Fleming led things off in the circle striking out 3 and walking none. Sam Klein, Emma Fleming, Delaney Fleming and Claire Warden each collected one hit for Woodson. Woodson turned one double play in the game and they were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.
Seniors: Claire Warden, Elle Foglio, Syd Huffman, Emma Fleming, and Sedona Adams
JV Boys Soccer:
Boys JV Soccer had 2 wins this past week. They resumed their strong play for a solid (3-0) win over Alexandria City. All the goalkeepers defended well resulting in a shutout. Jake Foust led the team with 2 goals getting past the AC keeper. Dawit Abebe capped off the win with a final goal. Great effort by the entire team! Their winning streak continued with a 2-0 win over Yorktown. Coming out of a 0-0 score at halftime, Neev Shahbazi hit a banger into the upper corner to set Woodson on a winning path. Javi Babanly scored a PK for the team to secure the win. Goalkeepers, Luke Goodson, Thomas Syron, and Thomas Warden ended the week with clean sheets. Go Cavs!

JV Baseball:
Woodson JV Walks it Off in Dramatic Season-Ending Victory over South County
Woodson's JV Baseball Team scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning in a come from behind walk-off victory over the South County Stallions. The final score was 7-6.
Designated hitter Kai McMurry got the scoring started for the Cavaliers in the 3rd inning with an RBI double to deep left field which scored Tommy Quigley from 3rd base. McMurry later advanced to 3rd and then scored when an attempted throw to double him off the bag following a hard hit line-out skipped past the third baseman and went to the fence. McMurry scooted across the plate and Woodson was up 2-0 after 3 innings.
Cavs sophomore hurler Adam Stuhrke got the start and went 4 and 1/3 strong innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 earned runs, and 2 walks against 5 strikeouts. Callum Keller and Caleb Nobel combined for two innings of 1 earned run relief and closer Will Wise would earn the win by striking out both hitters he faced after inheriting a 2 runners on, 1-out situation in the top of the 7th inning. After 6.5 innings, Woodson trailed South County 6-5.
But Wise wasn't satisfied with the clutch strikeouts. In the bottom of the 7th, Nick Prabhakar reached base on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a throwing error, and advanced to third on a 1-out single by Evan Honeysett who appeared to have re-injured a hamstring earlier in the game and who was noticeably hobbled throughout the contest. Prabhakar then scored the tying run on a bloop RBI single by Tim Lee that fell from the night sky harmlessly behind the infield while Honeysett limped into 2nd. Wise then stepped to the plate and lined a game-winning, walk-off single to right field as Honeysett limped around 3rd base and across home plate. He and Wise were met by a rush of teammates who swarmed the field in celebration of a glorious and season-ending victory.
Varsity Girls Lacrosse:
In a thrilling conclusion to the regular season, Woodson girls’ lacrosse secured a crucial victory against the West Potomac Wolverines this past Thursday night. With both teams vying for the top spot in the Patriot District, the game was a showdown under the flashing lights of West Potomac.
The Cavaliers got off to a quick start, with goals from senior Reese Cuviello and sophomore Kaitlyn Villu propelling them to an early lead. Despite some costly turnovers played well by anticipating West Potomac players, Woodson maintained their edge, with back-and-forth action keeping the game intense as the first half came to a close. With just one second left on the clock, senior Alex Walrath, with her eye on the clock, fired a long-distance shot that found its way past the West Potomac standout goalie. However, the ref disagreed and called the goal back.
The third quarter saw a slower start for Woodson's offense. The offense moved the ball well and had several close shots that were well backed up. However, the Cavs didn’t score a goal until a well-timed pass from Walrath resulted in a score by senior Greer Dempster. Despite the lack of offensive third quarter scoring, Woodson's zone defense, led by outstanding goalie play from senior Maddie Gaboury, and efficient clearing by defenders Ella Mathias, Jaime Ellenberger, Julia Oleyar, Kendall Schottler, and Anabelle Robinson, prevented West Potomac from scoring.
In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, senior Milla Cronin found senior Julia Lieberman for an 8-meter sneak goal, securing the victory for the Cavs. Woodson successfully ran out the last minutes of regulation time, ending with a final score of 10-7 in their favor.
Next up for the lady Cavs is the first round of the Patriot District tournament next Friday night.
Woodson points: Reese Cuviello (5 goals), Alex Walrath (2 assists, 1 goal taken away 😊), Kaitlyn Viilu (1 goal), Ilsa Castleton (1 goal), Greer Dempster (1 goal, 1 assist), Julia Lieberman (2 goals), Milla Cronin (1 Assist).
Rowing:
Woodson Rowing kicked off our championship races by bringing home 2 state titles and a bid for Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) Nationals! Day 1 of the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships (VSRC) was held on Saturday, May 4 in the cold rain. This didn’t hold back the Women’s 3rd Varsity and Women’s Novice 8+ from winning both their heats and finals races to take home the trophy in their events. The Men’s Freshman 8+ set themselves up for a run at finals with a 3rd place in their heat and then went on to place 2nd overall. In the Freshman event, the top 3 boats qualify for the SRAA National Regatta, which will be held on May 24-25 in New Jersey. Day 2 of the VSRC Championship will be held this coming weekend on May 11. Woodson Rowing will race a Men’s and Women’s 1st and 2nd Varsity and a Men’s Jr. 4+ with hopes of more trophies and more bids for Nationals. Come out and #PullforWoodson or follow woodsonrowing on Instagram to cheer them on!
