Roadrunner Rundown

May 6, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are proud of the hard work our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students have put into preparing for the SOL tests.  This time of the year is all about balance.

  • A single test on a single day is NOT a referendum on a student’s knowledge base.  It is a single picture of their learning at that moment in time.  We don’t want students stressing about the results as that can impact their ability to focus.
  • At the same time we want students to take their best possible picture by putting forth their best effort at all times.

Testing begins this week so please help your child by making sure they get plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast prior to their testing days.  Please try to avoid scheduling appointments on SOL testing days.

Below is the SOL testing schedule:

  • May 7    grade 4/5 Reading SOL
  • May 8    grade 3/6 Reading SOL
  • May 14  grade 4/5 Math SOL
  • May 15  grade 3/6 Math SOL
  • May 21  grade 5 Science SOL

The last weeks of school bring many fun activities and Field Day is one of them.  Students participate as a class in a variety of activities and games outside lead by our P.E. teachers and parent volunteers.

  • K, 1st and 2nd grade Field Day - Mon, May 20, 9:45 am-12:10 pm
  • 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade Field Day - Fri, May 24, 9:45 am-12:45 pm

A few volunteers are needed on May 24.  Please email Mr. Clancy at msclancy@fcps.edu if you are interested.  Lunch will be provided for parent volunteers.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

School Events and Information

Student Intention for the 2024-25 School Year

If you are moving over the summer and will not be attending Marshall Road School next year (or the respective middle school for rising 7th graders), call the office at 703-937-1500 or contact the school registrar, Shelly Koshuta, at mmarcumkoshu@fcps.edu .  If you have already contacted the school registrar about your upcoming move, you do not need to contact her again.  Click here for the Student Intention Form.  If you are moving over the summer but still living in the Marshall Road boundary, it is important to still contact the school registrar as soon as possible, so we can update the new address in the school computer system.

Summer Reading Book Drive

Marshall Road will be holding a book drive to provide summer reading materials for families in our community.  We will be accepting book donations Monday, May 6-Friday May, 24.  All book donations can be dropped off in the MRES lobby any time during the school day.  Please only donate new or gently used books appropriate for grades K-6.  We cannot accept books for adults, books with toys or extra pieces, baby books or board books, religious materials, outdated books, or books with ripped covers/pages.  Please direct any questions to Librarian, Lisa Hoffman: lahoffman@fcps.edu.

BIKE: The Bike Train will depart from Meadow Lane Park at 8:15 am.  Mayor Colbert, the Town of Vienna Police, and Trek Fairfax will join the train.

WALK: Walk from home (maybe try a new route!)

RUN: The "Marshall Road Runners" will depart Meadow Lane at 8:10 am.

BREAKFAST: The PTA will be serving bagels, fruit, and coffee/juice on the blacktop in front of the school from 8:30-9:15 am.

This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with other MRES families and students. Please note that all children need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian at breakfast - do not send your child unsupervised.

Share a Note of Appreciation with our Teachers and Staff this Week

We celebrated Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week in February, but this week we would like to remind all 120 of our teachers and staff members how much we appreciate them.  The PTA will provide a few small treats this week.  We would also like to invite all our students and families to send in a note or picture sharing their appreciation.  Print off one of these pages (Teacher / Principal / General / Drawing) or create your own.  Students can deliver the notes directly or place them in the bin in the lobby and the PTA will deliver them.

Dining 4 Dollars – MRES on Church Street

Take a stroll along Church Street on Wednesday, May 15 to support local businesses and have fun!  A portion of all sales will be donated to MRES from Trace -- The Zero Waste Store, Bard's Alley, The Wine Outlet and Rita's Italian Ice and Custard.  We have a few surprises scheduled throughout the evening. The roadrunners will be strolling too!

Family Sports Night & Ice Cream Social

Get ready to lace up your sneakers and join us for an evening of fun, games, and delicious treats at our Family Sports Night and Ice Cream Social on Friday, May 17 from 5:30-7:30 pm!  We will have kickball and soccer on the MRES fields and basketball on the blacktop.  Parents/Guardians, Students, and Teachers/Staff members are all welcome to come out and play.  No need to be a seasoned athlete!  Just come out and have fun!  Please sign up to play here.  After playing, you can cool down with a sweet treat courtesy of the PTA.  This event is a fantastic opportunity for families to bond, make memories, and celebrate the joy of being active together.
