Principal’s Message

Dear Wolverines,

Faculty Appreciation Week is next week.  We have some exciting events, activities and gifts for West Potomac’s amazing faculty and staff.  Please reach out to a faculty or staff member and thank them for all their hard work and dedication to the students and school community here at WPHS!  I am truly proud to be the principal of this incredible school and the community!

Our Wolverines have had another impressive week.  Below are a few highlights.

Students from 26 Fairfax County public schools have been named recipients of the 2024 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County, designed to recognize young people who work as peacemakers.

The Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County began in 2006 as a way to encourage people to think more about peace as both a means and an end, and to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. Every year, the high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 17 secular and religious sponsoring organization.  One of our own Wolverines is a recipient of this amazing award.

Congratulations to 11th grader, Eli Kopp, West Potomac High School. Eli is a founding member and current president of the Jewish American Club (JAC) at West Potomac. When antisemitic graffiti marred West Potomac’s 2023 graduation ceremony, he vowed to make every effort to bring peace to the school through cross-cultural contact and education. A goal of the Club is to involve students who do not know about Jewish people and help them to learn about their culture and customs. Eli is also a student-to-student ambassador with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, whose goal is to counter bigotry and stereotypes by providing personal contacts and descriptions of life as a Jew.

Eli has also participated in the L’Taken Social Justice Seminar, a program in which students discuss issues such as reproductive choices, LGBTQ rights, climate change, and health care, and he spoke to his representatives on Capitol Hill, advocating for laws to end gun violence.     https://fairfax.studentpeaceawards.org/eli-kopp/

In addition, we celebrated the AP/Senior Art show this week.  The talent in the room was truly amazing.  Below are a few of our artists and their work.

 AP Test Proctors/Monitors Volunteers Needed!

  • We have a few openings left!  We need your help!  With AP tests starting Monday, it’s important we always meet the required number of proctors in the room required by college board.  Please consider volunteering for an exam!  By utilizing parent volunteers we will require less counselors in the gym and allow them to continue to work with their students during the school day.
    • What is required of me? For morning tests arrive approximately 7:40am and follow the directions of the lead proctor.  This might include passing out tests, pencils, assisting with bathroom breaks or just supervising.  During the test you’ll supervise the students by circulating through out the gym.  At the conclusion of the test you’ll assist the lead proctors in collecting materials.
    • How long will the test run? Traditionally morning test end around 12pm, but could go slightly longer or end earlier.  Afternoon proctors should arrive approximately 11:45am and end around 4pm but again could go slightly longer or end earlier.
    • I can help, where do I sign up?   Here:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0845ACAA2AA0FCC61-49036911-wphs#/
    • I can help support but I would need to leave a few minutes early, can I still help? YES!  Please email Mr. McMahon and he can coordinate with you (kjmcmahon@fcps.edu).
    • Please remember: Parent volunteers may not proctor a test that their child is taking.  Also, a parent volunteer cannot be a teacher of the class assigned to the AP Exam (For example an AP Biology teacher cannot volunteer to proctor the AP Biology exam).
