Dear Little Run Family,

It was an amazing week at Little Run! Our 3rd and 5th graders tackled their Reading SOL assessments, and we want to take a moment to commend them on their hard work and dedication. They have been preparing diligently for these tests, and we are confident they put forth their best effort.

As a reminder, we have more SOL testing scheduled for the coming weeks. To ensure our students feel their best and perform at their peak, please encourage them to get a good night's sleep before each test day, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Their hard work and focus are truly appreciated!

We are thrilled to kick off Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week this coming Monday, May 6! Our dedicated teachers and staff go above and beyond every day to create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for our students. Their commitment to our school community is truly inspiring.

Throughout the week, we will be celebrating these amazing individuals with love and thanks, coordinated by our wonderful PTA and families. Please join us in showing our heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education. Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

🥎 Thank You, Mason Softball Team 🥎

Mason Softball

On behalf of the entire staff and student body at Little Run, we want to express our sincere gratitude for their incredible partnership as our Adopt-a-School team this year!

Their support has gone far beyond a simple sponsorship. They brought energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to connect with our students. We were thrilled to have them visit our classrooms and participate in lessons, reading books, coloring, and simply engaging in conversation with our students during lunch. These interactions made a real difference, building positive connections and role models for our young learners.

The student-athletes' dedication truly brightened the school year for both students and staff. We know they have busy schedules, so their willingness to give back to the community is especially appreciated.

As these young women head into finals, we wish them all the best for success on and off the field! We are already looking forward to welcoming the team back next year and continuing this fantastic partnership.

Class Assignment Input Form

The school year 2024-2025 planning has begun! To assist in this process, we would like to invite you to provide some information about your child.

Your child’s current and upcoming classroom teachers work together with specialists, resource teachers, administrators, and the grade-level team to prepare class assignments for the next school year. They will review this form and consider the information relevant to the class assignment. Little Run has an incredible staff! Please do not request a specific teacher.

Your input is appreciated. We work diligently to consider all aspects of your child's class placement.

Please complete this form by May 10.

Feel free to contact Christie Yarn and Lesley Hassen with any questions.

Upcoming Lockdown Drill at LRES

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. All students will participate in the lockdown drill.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

Resources for Newly Registered Families

Being connected to your school community helps you stay informed and support your child’s success. Take some time to get familiar with the many resources and tools available to FCPS families, including:

  • School Age Child Care (SACC) – This Fairfax County government program provides a safe and fun environment before and after school for elementary school-age children.
  • FCPS Communications for Families – FCPS shares news and information to support student learning and promote family involvement.
  • Family Engagement Resources – FCPS works to connect, strengthen, and support our families, schools, and communities.
  • Do You Know About Family Liaisons? – Family liaisons serve as a link between families and schools. You may contact Maria Ruiz, our family liaison, at miruiz@fcps.edu or 703-503-3500.

There’s an easy to follow five-step process outlined for parents registering their children for kindergarten. Be sure to register your child as soon as possible!

Register Your Children Online

Online registration is available for new and returning (re-enrolling) FCPS families! Apply today to help us plan for the 2024-25 school year.

☀️ Save the Date for FCPS’ Summer Extravaganza

Don’t miss a day of family fun and learning at the FCPS Summer Extravaganza!

Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., where students will be able to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.

Representatives from local businesses, Fairfax County Public Library, and the Fairfax County Park Authority are participating in the Summer Extravaganza. Community organizations, such as Neighborhood Community Services, will be at the event as well. All will have learning activities, tips, and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Visit the Summer Extravaganza webpage for more details and register to attend. Registration is not required, but it's helpful for planning purposes.

🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh-grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth-grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

💪 Let's Finish the School Year Strong!

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:

  • Check your child’s attendance record.
  • Help your student stay engaged at school.
  • Report future absences.
  • Understand the FCPS school calendar.

Learn more about attendance resources.

📞 FCPS Ombuds Provides Confidential Guidance

The Office of the Ombuds engages with families, students, and staff to offer resources and improve the experience of each and every member of the FCPS community. They work as an independent confidential resource to help get answers to questions, offer options to resolve concerns and hear complaints regarding FCPS matters.

Anyone seeking assistance from the Office of the Ombuds may call 571-423-4014, email ombuds@fcps.edu, visit their webpage, or submit a question. Ombuds staff do not change or make decisions, policies, or regulations; take sides; or provide legal advice.

⏰ Community Forums on Middle School Start Times

FCPS is exploring options for adjusting middle school start times and invites the public to be part of the process. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Register for an in-person forum by clicking on one of the following dates:

A virtual forum will be held on Monday, May 13, 6:30-8 p.m. That registration link will be available soon.

While registration is not required, it does help with planning. Language interpretation and childcare will be provided. Learn more about the project exploring middle school start times

Little Run Elementary PTA

PTA logo - every child. one voice.

We encourage everyone to join our wonderful PTA this year! Please click HERE to check out our PTA's website and to learn more about how your family can get involved.

The Nominating Committee is still fielding interest for the PTA Board's Secretary position. Little Run's PTA supports our staff and students in a variety of ways. Staff Appreciation Week, Book Fair, STEM Night, Classroom Grants, Cultural Assemblies and School Supply Support are just a few examples.

This is a great "starter" role for involvement with the Board. Attendance of 8-10 meetings is required but can be virtual or in-person. The Board takes into account availability prior to scheduling. The time commitment outside of meetings is minimal - 1 to 2 hours per month, total. Plus, it's an opportunity to meet and work with a great group of people.

If you are interested, know someone who could be or simply want more information, please contact Mia Detor (5th grade parent) at mmdetor@protonmail.com by May 10th.
