This week has been all about showing appreciation for our amazing teachers and staff! Our students have been spreading kindness on UMTv News by giving shout outs to their teachers, highlighting the incredible work they do day in and day out. Let's continue to show our gratitude and support for our dedicated educators who make a difference in our students lives every single day! Family Input for Class Placements 2024-2025

As we begin to plan for the 2024-2025 school year, we are inviting your input. Creating class assignments requires careful consideration and the involvement of many perspectives. We know a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success. Should you have additional information about your specific child that school staff may not know, particularly regarding learning style and classroom environment; you have the option to complete the  Family Input Form no later than Monday, May 20, 2024.

If you have more than one child attending UMES, please complete one form per child.

We ask that you do not request specific teachers and keep the information shared about your child and the type of learning environment you feel would be the most productive for him/her/them.  We assure you that with or without a form, each child’s social emotional and academic strengths and needs are considered. Families will receive class placement notification just prior to school starting in August.

UMES 4th Grade Strings: 2024-2025 Current 3rd graders are invited to join Strings for next year!  Students can learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass next year. Career Day

We are excited to celebrate career diversity this year at Union Mill! We will be hosting an in-person event during the school day on Monday, June 10th for all students. Please fill out the following form by May 17th if you are interested in sharing your career in a classroom presentation. While we hope to be able to accommodate all volunteers, please understand that we may need to utilize a lottery. We are still working out the details of presentation times for each grade level so we hope you’ll be flexible with us as we work out the format of the day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Schmidt or Mrs. Kourajian.

Save the Date for FCPS’ Summer Extravaganza

Don’t miss a day of family fun and learning at the FCPS Summer Extravaganza!

Stop by Woodson High School on Saturday, June 1, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., where students will be able to take part in engaging educational activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire growth.

Representatives from local businesses, Fairfax County Public Library, and the Fairfax County Park Authority are participating in the Summer Extravaganza. Community organizations, such as Neighborhood Community Services, will be at the event as well. All will have learning activities, tips, and helpful information for families. Enjoy face painting, food, music, a moon bounce, a petting zoo, storytime, and student performances — all at no cost!

Visit the Summer Extravaganza webpage for more details and register to attend. Registration is not required, but it's helpful for planning purposes.

IMPORTANT SOL TESTING INFORMATION

Our students grades 3-6 will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests starting Tuesday, May 7, 2024. It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school. Also, it will help your child to perform his or her best if he or she has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast and comes to school with a positive attitude.
