Dear Island Creek Families,

Happy May! Next week is Staff Appreciation Week and we're excited to celebrate our amazing team. Together with the PTA, we'll be showering our staff with extra love and appreciation.

SOL testing begins next week. Our 3rd and 4th grade students take the Reading SOL on Wednesday, May 8. Our 5th and 6th Grade students take the Reading SOL on Thursday, May 9. Please ensure that your child(ren) have a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive to school on time.

As a reminder, tomorrow is Orthodox Greek Friday and school will be closed for students.

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for entrusting us with your amazing children!

All the best,

Jen Fallert, Principal

No School for Students Tomorrow

Friday, May 3, is Orthodox Good Friday, and a teacher workday. Millions of Orthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday, also known as “Great Friday” to remember the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. There will be no school for students that day.

Yearbook Orders

Online ordering for yearbooks has closed but we are still accepting cash and checks (make payable to: Barksdale School Portraits), $25.00.

Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input (optional) due Friday, May 17

Our staff will be starting to create tentative class groupings this spring, with classroom assignments finalized in mid-August.  As we make these placements, we consider many factors including individual student information, teacher input, and social relationships. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests. Due to the many factors we consider in creating classroom placements, including the staffing of our teachers, requests for a specific teacher cannot be honored.

If you have information that you believe is pertinent to your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form by Friday, May 17. There is no need to complete the form if you do not have any information you would like us to consider.

FCPS Cares Program

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Island Creek Elementary. We love our Croc Staff!

Bike and Roll to School Day: Wednesday, May 8

We are celebrating and encouraging students to include a safe route to school as part of a healthy and active lifestyle. Students who ride their bikes can park their bikes during the school day in the gym. Please bring your bike to the back of the school and into the gym, at Door #6. Students who are in SACC, childcare or not within walking distance are welcome to participate with parent approval/ supervision. We will have a small prize and stickers for all!

If you ride your bike to school:

  • All students must wear a helmet. Fairfax County law requires any-one under 15 to wear a helmet.
  • Check their equipment: Air, Brakes and Chain
  • Obey all traffic laws, a bicycle is a vehicle
  • See and be seen
  • Go with the flow of traffic, ride on the right.
  • Be predictable, stay alert
  • If riding on a sidewalk, yield to pedestrians and walk your bike if the sidewalk is crowded with walkers
  • Beware of cars coming out of driveways if you ride on the sidewalk
