Parent Volunteers Still Needed!

Woodson Student Services is still in need of AP proctors for AP exams in May!

As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

JV Baseball:

Woodson JV Cavaliers defeated the Fairfax Lions 6-3 in a Friday Night SmackDown.

Freshman Ben Torbert led the home team Cavs, pitching 5 2/3 quality innings and giving up 5 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7. He was relieved by Will Wise who blanked the Lions for the remaining 1 1/3 innings, surrendering just 1 hit and striking out 2.

Once again, the Cavalier attack was paced by Sophomore Barrett Pullen who went 2-for-2 from the plate with a single, a double, a hit-by-pitch, and 2 RBIs. The first baseman is sporting a .400 batting average with 5 RBIs over the season's first 5 games. Evan Honeysett, Ray Rivera, Colton Mayes, Nick Prabhakar, and Grant Reynolds all connected for singles in the game.

Woodson had a solid game defensively as well. 3rd Baseman Reynolds and Centerfielder Rivera flashed the leather and turned in highlight-worthy web gems for the Cavs.

The Woodson JV Cavaliers won their second consecutive game on Monday evening, defeating the South County JV Stallions 9-2 at South County High School.

Woodson was led by Sophomore, "You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine" Will Wise who threw 5 innings, giving up just 1 hit and no earned runs on 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

The Cavaliers' 8-hit attack included 2 hits and 3 RBIs from catcher Callum Keller, a 2-RBI triple from right fielder Evan Honeysett, and doubles from infielders Grant Reynolds and Kai McMurry. Ray Rivera, Nick Prabhakar, and Reynolds also had singles in the contest.

The Stallions appeared to have been blinded by the light of Cavs hurlers Wise, Liam Wade, and Adam Stuhrke. The ponies' only hit in the game was a lone single by third baseman William Middleton.

Rowing:

Woodson rowing celebrated our seniors on Friday, April 26 at a special team dinner. We have the pleasure of sending 19 seniors off to their post-high school lives - but not until after Championship Season! In the last regular regatta of the season, the rowing team continued to show off Woodson’s hard earned strength with top 5 finishes in all events entered. Championship regattas begin next weekend, with novice and lower boats competing for State honors on May 4, while upper varsity boats compete on May 11. State championships will be at Sandy Run in Fairfax Station. Come out and #PullforWoodson or follow woodsonrowing on Instagram to cheer them on!

Woodson Library Offers Community Service

We are delighted to share that the Woodson library has had another successful year of service-learning. Throughout the year, our students dedicated their time to creating hats and scarves to be donated to a local homeless shelter. For the past three years, Woodson has had the privilege of partnering with S.O.M.E, a center in Washington D.C., and together we have donated over 300 handmade items.

Additionally, midway through the year, Woodson Library collaborated with ECHO, a center located in Springfield VA. The team at ECHO was truly grateful to receive our donations and was exceedingly impressed with the quality of work demonstrated by our students.

I am thrilled to announce that this year, Woodson students generously donated 75 hats and 62 scarves to ECHO. In total, 995 service hours were dedicated to service learning.

A heartfelt thank you to all the students who contributed by making a hat or scarf. I am eagerly looking forward to our continued collaboration next year.
