Roadrunner Rundown

April 29, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you had a great weekend and are enjoying the lovely weather.

This week the character strength we will focus on is Enthusiasm.  Enthusiasm means you approach life with excitement and energy.  You energize people around you.  Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations which often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups.  One person’s enthusiasm can spark others to think, speak, and act with more energy and conviction.  Consider having a conversation with your child this week about how they can bring enthusiasm to their classroom and to others.

I recognize the busyness of family life sometimes leaves all of us scrambling for breakfast items or a lunch ready to go (ask my two HS aged kids about my preference that they pack food at night not at 7 AM 🙂).  I also recognize that we live in an age of easy food delivery.  We are asking that families do their best to focus on: 1. A healthy lunch goes a long way to provide good energy for learning.  2. The school does provide a healthy lunch option.  Restaurant food is a treat that is likely better for outside of the school day.  3. Food should not be sent for multiple kids in the same way we would not expect any family to send 4 cupcakes to school where students sit in groups of 6-8 as we don’t want to leave others out.  Please know that food delivery for students is not an approved practice at the MS and HS level either.

There will be no school for students this Friday, May 3 as this is a Teacher Workday for staff.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

School Events and Information

Lost and Found

Please have your child check our Lost and Found for missing items this week.  Unclaimed items will be donated on May 3rd. To prevent lost items, please write your child's last name on all personal belongings.

Student Intention for the 2024-25 School Year

If you are moving over the summer and will not be attending Marshall Road School next year (or the respective middle school for rising 7th graders), please contact the school registrar, Shelly Koshuta, at mmarcumkoshu@fcps.edu or call the office at 703-937-1500.  If you have already contacted the school registrar about your upcoming move, you do not need to contact her again.  Click here for the Student Intention Form.  If you are moving over the summer but still living in the Marshall Road boundary, it is important to still contact the school registrar as soon as possible, so we can update the new address in the school computer system.

Summer Reading Book Drive

Marshall Road will be holding a book drive to provide summer reading materials for families in our community. We will be accepting book donations Monday, May 6 - Friday, May 24.  All book donations can be dropped off in the MRES lobby any time during the school day.  Please only donate new or gently used books appropriate for grades K-6.  We cannot accept books for adults, books with toys or extra pieces, baby books or board books, religious materials, outdated books, or books with ripped covers/pages.  Please direct any questions to Librarian, Lisa Hoffman: lahoffman@fcps.edu.

PTA Update

Sun

Save the Date: Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast!

All MRES students and their families are invited to attend Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast on Tuesday, May 7!  Meet at Meadow Lane Park at 8:00 am or come directly to the blacktop at 8:30 am.

BIKE: The Bike Train will depart from Meadow Lane Park at 8:15 am.  Mayor Colbert, the Town of Vienna Police, and Trek Fairfax will join the Bike Train.

WALK: Walk from home (maybe try a new route!)

RUN: The "Marshall Road Runners" will depart Meadow Lane Park at 8:10 am.

BREAKFAST: The PTA will be serving bagels, fruit, and coffee/juice on the blacktop in front of the school from 8:30-9:15 am.

This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with other MRES families and students.  Please note that all children need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian at breakfast - do not send your child unsupervised.
