Principal's Message

Dear Franklin Sherman Elementary School Community,

Spring is in full bloom, and so is the energy at Franklin Sherman! This past week was a whirlwind of learning, fun, and appreciation. We celebrated Earth Day by participating in exciting classroom activities about our planet. We also had a jam packed week with Earth Day spirit week. It was great to see so many unified color days and a fun animal print to end our week. The 5th grade also got to enjoy their field trip to the National History Museum.

Celebrating Kindness:

Congratulations to our April Panda Kindness winners! These students consistently demonstrate empathy and compassion towards their peers, making Franklin Sherman a more welcoming place for everyone. It is also wonderful to watch students cheer on their peers!

Staff Appreciation:

Did you know that last week's staff meeting had a delicious twist? We enjoyed a catered breakfast from Campus Survival Kits, the same company many of you utilize when purchasing school supplies. Based on the number of parents that purchased through Campus Survival Kits, the school earns points and we cashed in our rewards for a delicious breakfast last week.

Upcoming Events:

Teacher Work Day: Just a friendly reminder that next Friday, May 3rd, is a designated teacher work day. Students will enjoy a well-deserved break while our educators participate in professional development opportunities.

Mark Your Calendars!

Get ready to shower our amazing teachers with love and appreciation! The week of May 6th marks our annual Staff Appreciation Week. Please check the PTA email to find ways you can help in showing your appreciation and gratitude for the staff here.

Class Placements for 24-25:

Each spring, we begin the essential task of determining class placements for the next school year.  The school staff works collaboratively to create classroom assignments.  It is the task of the grade level teachers, specialists, and administration to determine distribution of students to optimally create classroom groupings.

As parents, you can assist us in determining class placement by sharing your insights about your child with respect to academic and behavioral information using this form. Please note that we do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement.  This includes hints that reference specific teachers. We cannot guarantee multiple friend requests nor exceptions for other students with whom there may be a conflict.

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Please pass the news on to friends and neighbors who have a Kindergarten aged child who should register for the 2024-25 school year.

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

The Green Panda

Spring is here! The trees are in bloom, the bulbs are out, and the birds are back! Did you notice our school garden? It needs your loving care: mulching, weeding, and planting.

Your child can be part of this by joining the FSES ECO Club: The Green Panda. The Green Panda meets every Wednesday from 4:15 to 5:00 in the library. We talk about the FCPS Get2Green program and learn about trees in our school grounds, native plants, rain barrels, composting, recycling, gardening, food waste etc.  In short, The Green Panda is focused on learning and acting toward stewardship of our environment while we are having fun in the outdoors!!!

If your child would like to join, have them pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Essimi, in the library.

For questions or additional information, please contact our librarian, Mrs. Essimi (rmessimimen@fcps.edu) or our counselor, Mr. Nielsen (jpnielsen@fcps.edu).

SEL Screener Results Posting Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher.
