Dear Dragons,
As we journey towards the end of the year, we are entering Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. You can significantly contribute to their child's success on SOL tests by ensuring they get a good night's sleep before each test day. Encouraging students to do their best and show their work during test preparation can also make a big difference. Remember, the schedule is provided below, so planning ahead is key. While these tests are important, they're just one data point. They help teachers tailor their programs to suit your child's needs better. So, let's work together to support our students and help them shine!
We continue our uphill battle with social media. Tic Toc, YouTube and other streaming apps can be dangerous pastimes for young people. There are many inappropriate and even dangerous messages that become viral and reach our children. Please be vigilant, talk to your children often about what they are watching, invest in software and apps that restrict inappropriate content and limit the amount of access your child has. Please let us know what support you need.
As always, thank you for partnering with us.

This event promotes engagement through collaborative activities. Twenty-five of our 5th and 6th grade students were inclusively invited for a day of growth, empowerment, and leadership exploration. We’re so proud of our Dogwood Dragons for being rising leaders.

Class Input 2024-25
As we move into the last months of school, it is time to begin preparing to plan for the 2024-25 school year. If you feel that there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, please complete this optional Parent Input Form by Friday, May 10th. Please remember that we do not take requests for specific teachers as we base our decisions on individual student strengths and instructional needs. This valuable information will also be shared with next year’s teacher.
🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!
Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, next Thursday, May 2nd 4:30-6:00 pm. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.
Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.
Action April
At the heart of being an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School is agency and empowering our students to take action. Throughout the month of April, we will engage in Action April in which our students will be presented with different ways to take action every day. Our students will also reflect and share ways that they took action and how it made them feel.
Please ask your child, “How did you take action today? How did it make you feel?”
SOL - Standards of Learning 2024 -Grades 3-6th
As we approach the month of May, we want families to have the tentative dates for our Standards of Learning Assessments that pertain to grade 3rd-6th. If any changes are made to the date this information will be communicated to families as soon as possible. Please do all that you can to avoid any non-emergency time off during the SOL testing dates. We are publishing the dates early so we can all plan accordingly!
Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon
FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.
In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.
Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher or school counselor.
