Parent Questionnaire SY 2025

Dear Vienna Families,

Keep in mind that social and emotional screener results are coming soon. FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s teacher or Mrs. Tracy Kretzer, our School Counselor.

Our best to you,

Mr. John Carmichael, Principal   Mrs. Amber Burnett, Assistant Principal

Offer Your Feedback: Upcoming School Health Services Satisfaction Survey April 15 - 26, 2024

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Health Services invites parents/guardians of FCPS students to participate in a survey requesting feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community.

FCHD employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians who interact with the school health rooms. The survey will open on April 15, 2024 and will remain open until April 26, 2024. The survey should take approximately five minutes to complete.

Submit your survey.

Staffing is based on student enrollment. Please help us get the staffing needed for VES by encouraging families that move into the neighborhood to register as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued support.

Registration is available online or you can pick-up paperwork in our front office.

Required documents for registration:

  • Proof of residency: A deed, lease agreement
  • Proof of birth: Original birth certificate
  • Health documentation: A certificate of physical examination including required screenings completed within the last 12 months prior to starting school by a US licensed physician.

Attendance: Students Are Learning Every Day

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during long breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

What is an unexcused absence?

An unexcused absence is one for which the parent or guardian does not have prior knowledge, consent, and/or legitimate reason. Examples of reasons that are not justified and will result in an unexcused absence include: family and/or student vacations, child care situations, non-school-related activities, missed school bus, etc...

Unexcused absences cannot be exempted from automatic notifications from FCPS and VES communications.

What is an excused absence?

An excused absence is one for which parents or guardians have prior knowledge, consent, and/or legitimate reason. Legitimate reasons may include: illness of the student, death in the family, doctor or dental appointment, observance of a religious holiday, etc...

Parents or guardians and students are encouraged to prearrange excused absences when possible.

Student Intention for the 2024-25 School Year

If you are moving over the summer and will not be attending Vienna Elementary School next year (or the respective middle school for rising 7th graders), please contact the school registrar, Darleen Ham, at dkham@fcps.edu or call the office at 703-937-6000.  If you have already contacted the school registrar about your upcoming move, you do not need to contact her again.  If you are moving over the summer but still living in the Vienna Elementary boundary, it is important to still contact the school registrar as soon as possible, so we can update the new address in the school computer system.
