Walk, bike or roll to school day

Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day, May 8th

Get ready for Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on May 8th! Walking and biking to school benefits both the students and the community in several ways. Students who walk and bike get more physical activity, have more time to socialize with their friends, and develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. The community benefits from reduced pollution and traffic congestion.

We encourage participants to plan a safe route in advance. A fun way to celebrate this day is to form a “walking train” with other Kings Park friends! Meet at the bike racks in the front of the building between door 1 and 2 at 8:20am to celebrate and receive a gift for participating! Then the students can proceed to their arrival entrance. Bus transportation will still be available and will follow the same route schedules. Kiss and Ride will still be available.

Recycling Your Solar Eclipse Glasses

Now that the eclipse has passed, what do you do with the solar eclipse glasses that can’t be stored for more than three years? Through Astronomers Without Borders, local organizations are collecting eclipse glasses for reuse. They will be vetted, packed, and shipped to schools and groups around the world who are in the path of next eclipse but may not have a safe way to view it directly.

Below are 2 local drop-offs, or you can send them to Kings Park with your child.  Your child’s teacher will be directed to where the glasses are being collected.

  1. Trace Zero Waste, 140 Church Street NW, Vienna, VA 22180
  2. Marymount University c/o Dr. Alice E Petillo, School of Sciences and Humanities, 2807 N Glebe Road, Arlington VA 22207

April is the Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize children from military families for their contributions and sacrifices. We recognize that children serve too! Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth in our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience. Kings Park ES invites you to recognize our military connected children during April, the month of the military child. Interested in learning more about military students and how to support them? Check out this calendar of daily activities for the month of April.

Family Input for Class Placements 2024-2025

As we begin to plan for the 2024-2025 school year, we are inviting your input. Creating class assignments requires careful consideration and the involvement of many perspectives. We know a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success. Should you have additional information about your specific child that school staff may not know, particularly regarding learning style and classroom environment; we ask that you please complete the Family Input Form no later than Monday, May 13, 2024.

If you have more than one child attending KPES, please complete one form per child.  We ask that you do not request specific teachers or friendship pairings and keep the information shared about your child and the type of learning environment you feel would be the most productive for him/her/them. We assure you that with or without a form, each child’s strengths and needs are considered. As in the past, families will receive class placement notification just prior to school starting.
