The Musical 1776 at Woodson

Check out the highly energized production of the musical 1776 at Woodson running this Friday and Saturday. Before there was Hamilton there was 1776 – John Adams is desperately trying to create America – but to do so he must defeat the English, unite the colonies, and convince the people it’s the right decision -  and the result is an epic show of passion, debate, and roof-raising musical fireworks. A musical where people aren't just fighting to create America, but for its very soul.

Parent Volunteers Needed!

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May! As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

Varsity Softball:

It was a busy week for the Varsity Softball team.  Monday the girls traveled to Alexandria City and defeated the Titans 10-0. Ceci Temple was first to get on the board.  Temple made the most of their chances at the plate. The number nine hitter led the team with three hits in three at bats. A triple by Penny Elliott and Claire Warden extended their lead. Delaney Fleming earned the win for Woodson. The starting pitcher struck out 6.  The Cavaliers were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Sam Klein made the most plays with six.

Wednesday, The Varsity team hosted the NVGSA 12U Dragons for youth night.  Each player got to experience what it feels like to run out on the field before a big game with hopes of one day playing for Woodson. Woodson was victorious with a 3-2 win over West Potomac. Pitching was impressive as Claire Warden started in the circle for Woodson and recorded 21 outs. Claire Warden struck out 13 batters on the day and threw an immaculate inning in the fifth, striking out the side on nine pitches. The Woodson Cavaliers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Delaney Fleming singled and Sedona Adams doubled, each scoring one run. Emma Fleming doubled on a full count bringing in the winning run.

Friday, the team came up short against Lake Braddock. They lost 6-3. Claire Warden was in the circle and took the loss for Woodson. She went 7 innings, striking out 11 and walking 2. Leadoff hitter Emma Fleming led Woodson with two hits.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse:

Woodson girls’ lacrosse ignited the turf in a whirlwind week, kicking off with a home showdown against the Lake Braddock Bruins this past Monday night. Initially a slow burn, the Woodson girls exploded into action in the 2nd quarter, sparked by a flurry of Alex Walrath's precision passes threading through the Braddock defense to find their mark. The halftime crescendo was led by senior goalie Josi Owens, who shut down a Braddock one-on-one opportunity with a display of dominance in the 8-meter zone. As the buzzer signaled the end of the 1st half, the Cavs asserted their authority with a commanding 8-2 lead.  Entering the 2nd half on Monday night, senior Reese Cuviello was poised on the brink of a milestone, just one goal away from notching her 200th career goal. Tension mounted as the scoreboard remained frozen until midway through the 4th quarter when Alex Walrath orchestrated a flawless play, connecting with Cuviello on a precision cut to secure her place in Woodson lacrosse history. Woodson emerged triumphant, sealing the deal with a resounding 9-3 victory.  Woodson points:  Reese Cuviello (5 goals, 1 assist), Eva Lennon (2 goals), Ilsa Castleton (1 goal), Julia Lieberman (1 goal), Alex Walrath (5 assists), Greer Dempster (1 assist), and Kaitlyn Viilu (1 Assist).

Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team

Wednesday night brought the clash of titans as the Woodson girls embarked on a short journey to lock horns with their crosstown rivals, the Robinson Rams. Robinson seized an early lead. Amidst the tension, senior Alex Walrath emerged as the lone Cav scorer in the 1st quarter, showcasing her prowess with not one but two mesmerizing one-on-one maneuvers to light up the scoreboard.  As the battle intensified into the 2nd quarter, senior Julia Lieberman also notched a goal for Woodson.  In the last few seconds of the 1st half, Alex Walrath scored a laser shot but had it called back for putting a little too much heat on it (a dangerous propel).  The 2nd half dawned with Woodson facing an uphill battle, plagued by costly turnovers that gifted Robinson easy scoring opportunities. Down 7 to 2, the Cavs refused to falter, channeling their resilience to mount a staggering comeback. Late-game scores from the likes of Greer Dempster, Julia Lieberman, Kaitlyn Viilu, and Milla Cronin knotted the score at 7 apiece.  Stalwart defenders Ella Mathias, Jaime Ellenberger, Julia Oleyar, Kendall Schottler, and Anabelle Robinson thwarted Robinson's offensive onslaught, sending the game into sudden-death overtime.  The 1st round of OT was a stalemate. But in the final round of OT, the Woodson girls quickly moved the ball to rotate the Rams' defense, and senior Greer Dempster seized an opportunity to make a quick drive and launch a shot that found the back of the Rams' net, sealing the Woodson victory. Final score: 8 to 7.  Woodson points:  Alex Walrath (2 goals, 2 assists), Julia Lieberman (2 goals), Greer Dempster (2 goals), Kaitlyn Viilu (1 goal), Milla Cronin (1 goal), Eva Lennon (1 Assist).

Friday night saw the Woodson girls back at home, ready to light up Pat Cunningham Stadium as they hosted the Alexandria City Titans. The evening kicked off with a celebration of the 12 Woodson lacrosse graduating seniors. With their families by their side, the seniors took a memorable walk across the field, reminiscing about their favorite team moments, from winning multiple regional titles to team dance competitions and karaoke.

Woodson lacrosse class of 2024 graduating seniors are:  Ilsa Castleton (destined for Delaware), Milla Cronin (running for Miami), Reese Cuviello (playing lax for James Madison), Greer Dempster (bound for Alabama), Jaime Ellenberger (heading to South Carolina), Madi Gaboury (playing lax for Shenandoah), Eva Lennon (playing lax for Roanoke), Julia Lieberman (going to James Madison), Ella Mathias (playing lax for St. Mary’s), Julia Oleyar (playing field hockey for CNU), Josi Owens (playing lax for Findlay), Alex Walrath (heading to Penn State).

As the game finally got underway, solid draw control play by Greer Dempster and her circle teammates Reese Cuviello and Julia Lieberman allowed the Lady Cavs to seize early control.  Woodson methodically built a lead, enabling senior defenders Ella Mathias, Jaime Ellenberger, and Julia Oleyar to push the ball into the offensive zone. Even senior goalie Josi Owens took a chance on offense, though she collided with her defender, drawing a charge. Despite the absence of goals from the Cav defenders against the much-improved Titan defense, their excellent ball movement in the offensive zone underscored the team's selfless play.  The final score favored Woodson, with a commanding 12-1 victory.  Woodson points:  Reese Cuviello (5 goals, 2 assists), Alex Walrath (1 goal, 2 assists), Eva Lennon (2 goals), Greer Dempster (2 goals), Julia Lieberman (1 goal, 1 assist), Milla Cronin (1 goal, 1 assist), Julia Oleyar (1 assist).

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Deadline April 29, 2024 - Congressional Art Competition

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
