Churchill Chatter - Issue 15, April 19, 2024

CORRECTION: Please see the corrected date below for the 6th-grade basketball game. It is actually on Friday, April 26th at 6 pm.

Dear Churchill Road Families,

As we wrap up our fourth round of grade-level parent coffees, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended. Your presence and engagement truly make a difference in our school community.  We are so grateful to Dr. Andrews, our reading specialist, for sharing valuable insights about the upcoming changes in Language Arts instruction. Stay tuned for more opportunities to learn about our new basal curriculum for next year!

Our staff was treated to a Chick-Fil-A lunch this week by the PTA.  It is a fan favorite here, and we can’t thank the PTA enough for their thoughtfulness and generosity.

On Wednesday, our school community came together to honor our military families by wearing purple. To our military families, we extend a special thank you for all that you do.

Mark your calendars!! Next week is Earth Week Spirit Week.  The week culminates with our 6th-grade basketball team taking on Oakton Elementary next Friday, April 26th, at 6 pm at James Madison High School. Be sure to check your child's VIPs for details on how to order tickets. Let's show our support and cheer them on to victory!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pierson-Barr and Ms. Niccolls

Offer Your Feedback: School Health Services Satisfaction Survey Through A26, 2024

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Health Services invites parents/guardians of FCPS students to participate in a survey requesting feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community.

FCHD employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians who interact with the school health rooms. The survey will open on April 15, 2024 and will remain open until April 26, 2024. The survey should take approximately five minutes to complete.

Submit your survey.

character counts

Character Strengths Focus

The next character strengths our school community is focusing on are Purpose and Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence

Purpose - You have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence - You appreciate the world’s beauty and the amazing skills that people have.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.

Did You Know...

Charles R Chaffin Ed.D from Psychology Today writes, “Digital fatigue is a real thing. That feeling of being tired and burned out from all the screen time in our lives. The endless and sometimes habitual scrolling and texting back and forth limits our attention and can just plain wear us out.” Here are some strategies to put down the devices and recharge.

Spring 2024 SOL Testing Dates

ACTUAL NEW SOL-2024

Please see the chart above for Churchill Road Spring SOL testing dates.  It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing! We thank you, in advance.

SEL Screener Results

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor.
