Notes from the Administration

Dear CWES Families,

This has been a fantastic week at CWES, filled with a variety of wonderful events that showcased our students' talents and recognized the strength of our community.

On Tuesday, we held our spring band concert. The students' dedication and hard work beamed through their performances. That same evening, we were also treated to a stunning display of creativity and imagination at the Woodson Pyramid Art Show. It was inspiring to see our students' vibrant artwork! We have so many talented students at CWES!

Additionally, this week we came together to celebrate Purple Up! Day and express our deepest gratitude to our incredible military families. Thank you for your service and for being a vital part of our school community. The sacrifices you make are deeply appreciated.

This week has been a wonderful reminder of the talent, spirit, and resilience that thrives within our school. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, or simply came out to show their support!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Moonhee Doan

Parent Input Form for 2024-2025 Class Placement

Each year, a team consisting of classroom teachers, special education teachers, administrators, specialists, and counselors come together to collaborate and provide feedback on the formation of class groupings. This is a comprehensive and cooperative process. We greatly appreciate your input regarding your child's learning needs. It's important to note that our staff is exceptional, and we kindly ask that you refrain from mentioning specific teacher names on this form.

Please rest assured that all forms will be carefully reviewed by our administration and teachers. While we strive to take all factors into account when determining class placements, we may not be able to fulfill every request. However, please know that all information provided will be taken into consideration as we make decisions about placement.

For your input to be considered, we kindly request that this form be completed and submitted by Friday, May 17, 2024

Please note that staff grade level assignments may occasionally change as a result of late enrollments or other unforeseen circumstances. Staff assignments will be finalized in August.

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

There’s an easy five-step process for parents wanting to register their child for kindergarten:

  1. Determine eligibility.
  2. Identify your local school.
  3. Gather documents.
  4. Fill out forms.
  5. Schedule an appointment. Please contact Amy Decatur, our Student Information Assistant, by email at aldecatur@fcps.edu or by phone at 703-764-5600 to set up an appointment

After the appointment at the school (the student and one caregiver must be present), the student will be ready for orientation, Bridge to Kindergarten, or any other introductory events each school may host. Read more about the registration process.

⏰ Community Forums on Middle School Start Times

FCPS is exploring options for adjusting middle school start times and invites the public to be part of the process. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Register for an in-person forum by clicking on one of the following dates:

A virtual forum will be held on Monday, May 13, 6:30-8 p.m. That registration link will be available soon.

While registration is not required, it does help with planning. Language interpretation and childcare will be provided. Learn more about the project exploring middle school start times

Family Summit Designed to Enhance Safety, Security, and Inclusion

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families such as raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Visit the Family Summit webpage to learn about the guest speakers and to register for the event. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

Nominate Someone Today for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award

Do you know of an outstanding person or group that has worked for equity in an FCPS school?  There’s still time to nominate a candidate for the 2024 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award.

This award recognizes staff, students, or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member may nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1. Full details are available on the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award webpage.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

FCPS Cares

FCPS Cares

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees, specifically at Canterbury Woods ES.
