Collage of six pictures with author, Stuart Gibbs

Bestselling author, Stuart Gibbs, visited Franklin!

Good afternoon, Franklin Community,

We had a super busy but fantastic week here at Franklin Middle School!  As you can see from the pictures above, we welcomed New York Times bestselling author, Stuart Gibbs, to Franklin MS on Wednesday!  All students were able to participate in his presentation and many students took advantage of the opportunity to get autographed copies of his books.  I’d like to give a huge thank you to our PTA for their generosity in contributing funds to support this event.

This week we also welcomed members of the Fairfax County Urban Forest Management Division as they supported us with the planting of 7 new trees on our property.  These trees were provided to us through a Fairfax County grant program, funded by the Tree Preservation and Planting Funds and supported by Sully Representative Kathy Smith.  Members of our Get2Green team participated in the planting of the trees and were eager to learn more about the many benefits of having trees in our community.  Please check out our social media accounts to see pictures from this great event!

Last night we hosted Stone Middle School for the first of what we hope will become an annual tradition of basketball games with them.  Our Falcons came up short but we had a fantastic crowd cheering on our student athletes.  Participation in sports and extracurricular activities is one of several important ways to support the overall success of our students and we look forward to continuing to expand opportunities for our students to become involved at Franklin MS.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend and, as always, please reach out to me at MLCase@fcps.edu with any questions or concerns.  Best of luck to our track team in their competition tomorrow, as well as to our musicians performing in the solo and ensemble festival at Carson Middle School!

Sincerely,

Michelle Case

Interim Principal

Passover

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Theravada New Year

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

MS Sports Physicals 2023-2024 School Year

Athletic physicals are required for middle and high school student-athletes.  Beginning May 1, 2024, FCPS high schools will offer athletic pre-participation physical exams for students interested in middle school sports during the 2024-25 school year.   These events serve as the primary fundraiser for our high school athletic training programs and each exam costs $50.  Rising middle school students are eligible to receive a physical at no cost although donations to the HS athletic training program are welcomed.

Pre-registration is highly encouraged; walk-in appointments may not be available.  You can register here: Student registration.  Once your registration is received, the school’s athletic trainer will contact you to confirm your appointment time.  Athletic physical exams must be completed on this form: FCPS Middle School Sports Athletic Participation/Parental Consent/Physical Examination Form (PPE).

If you are a medical professional (MD, DO, NP, PA, ATC, PT, EMT, etc.) interested in volunteering your time in support of these events, please register to help out: Volunteer registration.
