Bush Hill Updates -- Tuesday, April 23, 2024

A Note From Mrs. Duffy

Dear Bush Hill Families,

This week has been a whirlwind of activity here at Bush Hill, and I wanted to take a moment to share some of the highlights with you.

Last week, I was able to visit with several current 3rd grade classes to share about my recent trip to several of our country's National Parks! Did you know that 4th Graders across the country are eligible for a FREE National Parks pass? You can apply for your current or rising 4th grader to have a pass through this website. This initiative aligns perfectly with our Earth Day focus on appreciating the outdoors and being responsible stewards of our environment. We encourage you to take advantage of this incredible pass when your child is eligible!

We were honored to welcome Dr. Michelle Reid, the Division Superintendent, to our school today. Dr. Reid enjoyed meeting with our students and staff, and we were thrilled to showcase the wonderful things happening in our classrooms. Together, we visited a variety of classes to see our language arts instruction in action. We also had the opportunity to visit our beautiful pollinator garden while our 6th graders worked on caring for it and we learned alongside our kindergartners about the proper way to plant pumpkin seeds. It was inspiring to see their curiosity and enthusiasm for gardening!

Looking ahead, we are excited to host Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday of this week! This event is a fantastic opportunity for our rising kindergartners and their families to get acquainted with our school, meet our teachers, and learn about the exciting adventures that await them in kindergarten. If you know of a family with a rising kindergartner, please encourage them to join us at 6:00 pm at Bush Hill.

Thank you for your continued support of our school community.

Calendar Reminders: Passover

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated evening-only observance days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. These are full school days, but important events will not be held after school.

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, the new year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.”

SEL Screener

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March. This survey provides updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via mail.

For more information about the screener, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

A Bush Hill Fundraiser

Consider making your student or loved one’s legacy permanent at Bush Hill Elementary School by purchasing a brick to be placed on our brick path between Door 3 and Door 5. The bricks will be placed there among the other legacy bricks. We have two brick options to choose from. Bricks purchased now until May 24, 2024, will be laid in late summer 2024. Bricks purchased after May 24th, 2024, will be laid by Spring of 2025. All profits raised will be used to support student events, materials and supplies for Bush Hill ES.
