This week our Powell Pumas enjoyed many different events! Thank you to all of our families that purchased books during the book fair and also those that came out for the Book Fair Family Night and our First Powell Art Show. It was wonderful to see the students excitedly purchasing books and proudly sharing their artwork with their families and friends! We also were thrilled to recognize our military-connected youth on Wednesday as we honored Purple Up day. Our military connected students attended a were recognized with certificates, the receipt of a purple bracelet and a group photo. The pride they demonstrated as they were thanked for their service was heartwarming and shows how important their sacrifice is each and every day.

Students can watch this short presentation to get ideas for the activity. Any student, K-6, may participate. Students should mostly use recyclables and other repurposed items to create a new superhero that protects our Earth! Superheroes should be built at home and can be brought into school any day during Earth Week, April 22 – April 26. Students will drop off their superheroes at the library. When they drop off, they will complete a tag to include their name and teacher. As always, it is helpful to have the student’s name already somewhere on the superhero. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Bach at kmbach@fcps.edu.
Have fun creating!
(The presentation is only available using a student Google account.)

Colin Powell Elementary Girl Scout Troop 56092 has been working toward earning their Wonders of Water Journey Badges this year. They are learning why water is important and how they can conserve it. They have learned about the water cycle and how all the earth’s water is connected. They shared their love of water by creating ocean-themed sensory bins for the 2 PAC classrooms at CPES. They also pledged to save water by doing activities such as taking shorter showers and baths and using less plastic bottles and more reusable bottles.
Their journey ended this April with a take action project to replace old “No Dumping” stickers on the storm drains around Colin Powell ES. The stickers remind the community to not dump anything into our storm drains including sediment, nutrients, toxics, pathogens or litter. Storm drain water flows to the local streams and rivers and ends up in our closest watershed, Little Rocky Run. Thank you to the troop parents, administrative team at Powell ES, and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District for their support and guidance this year. Only rain in the drain! Save Water! -Troop Leader/CPES GirlScout Liaison Chelsea Washington”
