purple up

April is the month of the Military Child.  OES honored our military families and children by observing April 17 as Purple Up Day (a day to wear purple to show support).

volunteer appreciation

We celebrated our parent volunteers on Tuesday.  OES is fortunate to have such dedicated and supportive parents!  Thank you to all who volunteer and help OES be the best school we can be.

SEL

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual child’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your child's counselor.

book fair

Dear OES Families,

We’re excited to announce our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair from April 17 -April 26. Hosted by our staff and PTA volunteers, this event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school.

Book Fair Preview- all classes will have the opportunity to preview the fair and create a wish list on either Wednesday, April 17, Thursday, April 18 or Friday, April 19.

Fair Shopping Hours- students will be allowed to visit the fair to make purchases during the school day April 22-26.  We will also be open for an evening family shopping night on Thursday, April 25 from 5:00-8:00.

Friendly Reminders- In order to help the fair run smoothly, please discuss book choices/purchases with your student to help eliminate returns.

Also note, students should only come to book fair one time so that they are not missing class instruction. New this year, book fair sales are not taxed.

Thank you and please feel free to contact us with questions or for volunteering opportunities,

Corin Harmon -  OES Librarian, cjharmon@fcps.edu

autism acceptance

OES CARES: AUTISM ACCEPTANCE WEEK!
April 22 - April 26, 2024

We are proud to announce that OES will be observing Autism Acceptance Week from April 22- 26! This annual event reminds us that all students play a vital role in our school’s community and should be appreciated and respected. We are excited to show our support, and THIS IS HOW!

With a Special Video Message from PawsCLICK HERE to see how our favorite panther is getting ready for this important week at OES!
On PTV – The Student Council Association will be sharing facts about autism and neurodiversity during Panther TV morning announcements to help educate and inform students.
In Morning Meetings – Classes will be holding discussions on the topic and completing fun art activities to help everyone learn more.
On Facebook – Stay tuned to our PTA's Facebook Page! We will be sharing various facts about autism and neurodiversity to help promote the acceptance, awareness and understanding of our students, as well as the tens of thousands of individuals living with an autism diagnosis each year.
By wearing our new PTA “Kindness” T-Shirts, or any blue shirt, for “Autism Acceptance Day” on April 24! – Students, teachers and staff will be wearing their shirts to show our support as a school!
With a Special Reading List – Our librarian has created a wonderful reading list of books around the topic of autism and neurodiversity. These books will be showcased in our library’s display case. It is our hope that students and families will read and reference them to learn more about what it's like for an individual to live with autism; and that such knowledge will foster acceptance, empathy and compassion. CLICK HERE to view our complete list of suggested readings and print a copy.
It's going to be a special week at our school as we all come together in support of this important cause.

Thank you, OES Community!
