Lockdown Drill

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. Our school has a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures for responding to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year, and we also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before they practice a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any active shooter scenario training. They are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct our second and final lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will participate in the final drill.

The Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page offers detailed information on our lockdown drill program, parent tips and FAQs. We encourage you to review this content and have a conversation with your child about the importance of these safety drills. Your involvement is crucial in reinforcing the value of these drills.

Mantener seguros a los estudiantes y al personal es una prioridad para todos nosotros. Nuestra escuela tiene un plan de manejo de crisis y preparación para emergencias que se revisa y actualiza regularmente. Nuestro plan incluye procedimientos para responder a incidentes como incendios y tornados. Los estudiantes y el personal practican regularmente estos simulacros cada año escolar, y también practicamos simulacros de cierre.

Class Placement Input - Submit by Wednesday, May 1st

Creating class assignments for next year requires careful consideration and the involvement of many staff members.  We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success.  Please use this form to share information about your child that the school staff should know, particularly regarding friendships or neighborhood factors, by Wednesday, May 1, 2023.  Our teachers and staff use this information to create preliminary class groupings in May.   

We also ask that you do not request specific teachers.  This does not take into account the many variables to be considered such as grade-level changes or reductions in staff.  It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral needs or concerns.  Be assured that with or without a completed form, your child’s strengths and needs are considered in this lengthy and complex process.

Information About Upcoming SOLs

State and federal law require school divisions to test students in the core academic content areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The assessments that fulfill this requirement look differently based on the grade level and content area. This webpage provides the letter notifying families about the state assessments for students at each grade level 3-8.

• Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in reading, math, and science.
• Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) in reading and math.
• Local Alternative Assessments (LAA) in writing and social studies.

SOL testing will begin the week of April 30th. Below you will find the SOL Testing schedule for Grades 3-6. Please ensure your child attends school on their grade-level testing.

Retesting is available when students receive a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing) on their first attempt. Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If you believe your child would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the SOL test, please complete this permission form linked below and submit it to the school.

Another of the Portrait of a Graduate attributes we focus on is being a goal-directed and resilient individual.  As students grow as goal-directed and resilient individuals, they have skills to successfully address challenges that they will encounter throughout their lifetime.

Goal-Directed and Resilient Individuals:

• Engage in healthy choices to help their physical and emotional well-being
• Problem-solve difficult tasks
• Manage time and resources to accomplish goals
• Recognize their own strengths and growth
• Advocate for themselves

Ideas for Discussing Goal-Directedness and Resiliency at Home

Pay attention to when you utilize goal-directed and resilient skills in different situations throughout your day. Try to regularly share these examples with your student and explain how you used specific goal-directed and resilient skills to help navigate scenarios. Over time, you might share examples of how you used skills well and opportunities for you to grow, too. Sharing your stories will help model the skills, demonstrate the importance of reflection, and build understanding of how skills can be used in and beyond school.

You might ask your student questions such as:

• Why is it important to identify challenges and work to overcome them?
• If you want to ___, what’s a goal you might make? What could be your plan to meet the goal?
• How might you take responsibility for your actions, completing work, mistakes, etc?

Give Your Feedback on the Budget

We are now in the middle of the annual budget process, which includes opportunities for you to give feedback:

• Tuesday, April 16, through Thursday, April 18: The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors conducts public hearings on the county budget. Sign up to speak.  
• Tuesday, May 7: The County Board of Supervisors adopts its budget, tax rates, and transfer amount to FCPS. 
• Tuesday, May 14: The School Board holds a public hearing on the FCPS budget.
• Thursday, May 23: The School Board adopts FCPS’ approved budget.

Family Summit Designed to Enhance Safety, Security, and Inclusion

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families such as raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families. 

Visit the Family Summit webpage to learn about the guest speakers and to register for the event. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

School Health Services Satisfaction Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department and FCPS School Health Services invite parents/caregivers to participate in a survey on the level of satisfaction with support provided to your school community by School Health Services. The survey takes about five minutes to complete and is open until Friday, April 26. Your feedback can help to improve school health services.

A class will be held online in Spanish for immigrant families looking to reunite during challenging transitions. Postsecondary Education and Employment Options

FCPS’ Career and Transition Services will host Flash Forward, to provide students with disabilities seeking a standard or advanced diploma and their families an introduction to options available after high school. 

Flash Forward will be held Thursday, April 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School, in the cafeteria. Register online. Representatives from adult education, employment, and community programs (college, military, apprenticeship, trade school, gap year, and employment) will be on site to share information about their services.

National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 17  for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

Para mostrar nuestro apoyo a todas nuestras familias vinculadas al ejército, invitamos a todos los estudiantes, familias, empleados escolares y miembros de la comunidad del condado de Fairfax a "¡Purple Up!" el 15 de Abril por los niños militares. 

¿Por qué el color morado? El morado simboliza todas las ramas de las fuerzas armadas como una combinación del verde del Ejército, el rojo de la Infantería de Marina y el azul de la Guardia Costera, la Armada, las Fuerzas Aéreas y las Fuerzas Espaciales.
