Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Dear Stallion Families,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the blossoming spring weather! Even though it was only a four-day work week, we packed in lots of fun memories! Let’s get to them.

Celebrating Our Stallions!

Last week, we had the pleasure of celebrating National Assistant Principals Week, a time to honor and appreciate the outstanding work of our incredible assistant principals: Mr. Caven, Mrs. Tolan, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Beskenis. Their dedication, leadership, and knack for keeping things running smoothly are like a well-oiled machine, or should I say, like a well-stocked library with endless resources!

Speaking of libraries, this week marked National Librarian Day, a perfect opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of our dynamic duo, Ms. Strong and Ms. Romney. They don't just stack books; they stack opportunities for our students to explore, learn, and grow. Our library is a treasure trove of knowledge and a cozy retreat for curious minds, thanks to their passion and hard work. Here’s just one example of how they welcome and celebrate all of our students in our library. Thank you for all you do, Ms. Strong and Ms. Romney!

Exciting Events!

In other exciting news, our school is buzzing with upcoming events! As a friendly reminder, we have an art show on the horizon, which will be the first of its kind in our school’s history.

We started the week with a Monday Pep Rally to ignite our Stallion spirit. This was the first time I’ve ever been part of one that occurred at the beginning of the week, and I think we need to keep with this newest idea. Starting Spirit Week with a Pep Rally on Monday isn't just about boosting school spirit; it's also the key to rallying our enthusiasm and setting the tone for success in all aspects of life! From the Ring Toss to the Rock-Paper-Scissors Roshambo event to incredible dance routine of our K-POP student club, I know we all enjoyed this celebration.

On Thursday, we had a special “Advisory Choice Day,” which allowed our students to select from one of several dozen activities hosted by staff members. From making slime to participating in Zumba to so much more, our students appeared to really enjoy that special day.

I had an especially great time playing in the thrilling student vs. faculty volleyball game that had us all cheering (and maybe sweating a little too). Kudos to Mrs. Sam Tolan for orchestrating a game that not only entertained but also united us as a school community.

Let's not forget the sweet initiative by Sean Cousins, one of our senior stars. He's organizing a Krispy Kreme fundraiser to support fellow seniors with class fees and the All-Night Graduation Party. Who can resist the temptation of those delicious donuts, especially when it's for such a good cause?

And let's not forget our phenomenal Girls Tennis team, who recently showcased an impressive display of athleticism on the courts! Their dedication, skill, and sportsmanship are truly smashing, serving as a great reminder that in tennis and in life, it's all about keeping your eye on the ball and serving up your best shot! Their teamwork and determination inspire us all to ace every opportunity that comes our way. We're incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to cheering them on in their upcoming matches. Go, Stallions!

On the academic front, we recently had a Breakfast Breakdown where students shared their thoughts on diversity, advisory classes, and improvements like easier access to the library during lunch breaks. Thank you to all of these students for making it to our 7:30am meeting and sharing such wonderful ideas for SoCo.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead, filled with laughter, learning, and lots of love.

Warm regards,

Mental Health in Childhood

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most commonly diagnosed in children, which commonly occurs together. Anxiety are feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students include: increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter attention spans and information overload. Signs of anxiety include appearing worried, irritable or nervous, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, along with physical symptoms such as sleeping problems, headaches, and stomach aches. It is understandable for a parent to be worried because figuring out what to do is hard. Here are five simple ways to respond to teens with anxiety:

  1. Recognize warning signs.
  2. Guide your child to take a few deep breaths to slow things down.
  3. Make sure your child understands you are available if they need to talk.
  4. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and avoid downplaying situations or issues.
  5. Help them come up with ways to deal with the situation next time.
