Roadrunner Rundown

April 8, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are glad to see warmer weather in the forecast and are looking forward to another week filled with a variety of learning opportunities, some which will take place outdoors.

Student and staff safety is a priority at MRES, especially during arrival and dismissal.  Students may not be dropped off or picked up on Marshall Road or in the cul-de-sacs on Marshall Road.  Parents using Door 3 for arrival and dismissal are asked to either walk or park up by the VAC pool.  Our crossing guard has reported that parents are dropping students off from their cars along Marshall Road or using the back parking lot as an alternative to the K&R line.  For the safety of our students, families driving to the school for arrival or pick up, MUST use the K&R line.  Door 3 and Door 7 are to be used for students who are walking.  If you need to pick up your child early, please notify the office ahead of time.  The last time for a parent to pick up a student prior to dismissal is 3:40 pm.   Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.

As we shared last week, we will begin class placements for next school year very soon.  We invite parents to offer their perspective on friendships and on any unique needs your child has that we might not be aware of.  Please do not make requests for a specific teacher.  If you have information to share about your child that will assist us, please complete this form no later than Friday, April 26.  Please know that this is a hard deadline.  Any requests received after this date will not be considered.  When completing the form, please be sure to list each child in your family separately and identify the grade your child will be in next year.  Finally, we will take into account the information that you send us, but those final decisions rest only with our school team.  Thank you for being mindful of the process and deadlines.

There will be no school for students and staff this Wednesday, April 10.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

PTA Update

Marshall Road Bike Train

The Marshall Road Bike Train starts up again tomorrow!  The Bike Train departs Meadow Lane Park at 8:45 am.  Students may meet at Meadow Lane or join the Bike Train along the route.  See all Bike Train details here or check out this flyer.  Please consider joining our chat group to receive updates or to let us know if you can help chaperone.

If your student rides in the morning, please make sure they know how they are getting home in the afternoon and where they will meet you (at school, at home, or at Meadow Lane Park).  If they normally take the bus, you must inform the MRES office that they will be biking home by emailing Jennifer Heflin at jfheflin@fcps.edu.

PTA Meeting

Join us on Thursday for our next PTA Meeting & Chat with Chapman

Our next PTA meeting & Chat with Chapman will be hybrid (library or online) on Thursday, April 11th at 6:30 pm.  We will nominate Board members for the 2024-2025 school year.  We are also beginning a process for you to submit questions on any topics for Principal Chapman or the MRES PTA which would be “for the good of the group” (questions that pertain just to your family can be sent to school administration per usual).  Please use this form to submit them in advance of the meeting.  At this meeting Principal Chapman will also speak about how Responsive Classroom, Student Rights & Responsibilities, and supporting student behavior come together at MRES.

Anyone interested in serving on the PTA Board should contact a member of the Nominations Committee: Ismini Michail, Abdol Karbassi, or Vilma Hilton at nominations@marshallroadpta.org

Please use this zoom link to join.

Meeting ID: 870 7770 0972

Marshall Road Walking School Bus

The Marshall Road PTA, MRES administration, and FCPS Safe Routes to School have partnered together to plan a Walking School Bus for our student community that lives to the west of Nutley St.  The Walking School Bus will be held the morning of Tuesday, April 16.  It will start at Towers Park at 8:15 am and include stops at MetroWest and the bus stop at Vienna Metro Station before finishing at Marshall Road.

See flyer for more route information and safety tips.  Please sign-up to let us know if your student will participate so we can prepare snacks to enjoy upon arrival at MRES.

Save the Date: D4D at Smoothie King

Looking for a PowerMeal smoothie for dinner?  Or maybe an after-dinner smoothie for a refreshing treat?  We have you covered!  Stop by Smoothie King on Wednesday, April 17, 4:00-8:00 pm and Smoothie King will donate $1 for each smoothie purchased.  Just mention Marshall Road Elementary School.  See flyer

Save the Date for Marshall Road’s International Night

Marshall Road’s International Night will be held Friday, April 19, 5:30-7:30 pm.  This annual event is an opportunity for students to showcase their culture and heritage and to experience the rich diversity of our community.

Please consider signing up to host a country table or signing up to perform and share your talents.  Learn more on our International Night webpage

Photo Request

Earth Week

We are collecting photos of MRES students enjoying nature to use in a slideshow for the Roadrunner Report (morning news show) during Earth Week, April 22-26.  If you have photos to share, please email them to our Garden Educator, Christene Hendon at chendon@fcps.edu.  Deadline: Friday, April 19.  The slideshow will not be shared beyond students and staff.

Donate your Eclipse Glasses

Once the solar eclipse is over on Monday, students are welcome to bring back any undamaged eclipse glasses and place them in the collection box in the lobby by April 15.  The PTA will ship them to an organization that will send them to schools in Latin America so school-aged children can view the October 2024 Annular Eclipse.  See flyer.
