McNair Elementary School Weekly Newsletter- April 7, 2024

The Mustang Weekly Newsletter

Greetings McNair Students and Families,

What a great week! We were so excited to welcome our Mustangs back from spring break and together kickoff the fourth quarter!  On Wednesday morning, we held a school-wide assembly with illustrator and author, Mr. Jay Cooper. To learn more about Mr. Cooper's exciting career highlights, please visit  jaycooperbooks.com.  Additionally, a special thank you to the Buckley Family from McNair Upper Elementary School for helping to arrange Mr. Cooper's inspirational visit for our school community!

Furthermore, a solar eclipse is happening tomorrow on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. We received a VERY generous donation for approved eyewear from the Nune family so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear with their parent/guardian as they dismiss from school. Please see below in this newsletter for more important information about the solar eclipse. Thank you again, Nune family for your donation and generosity!

As we head into the final months of this school year, we remind families the importance of consistent attendance for your child.  Coming to school on time each day increases students’ abilities to thrive academically and socially.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns regarding attendance.

We are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, Mustangs!

All the best,

Mrs. Watson and Mrs. O'Bryant

Please contact us with any questions!

Principal: Elizabeth Watson, evwatson@fcps.edu

Assistant Principal: Brandy O'Bryant, bmobryant@fcps.edu

Happy Assistant Principal's Week, Mrs. O'Bryant!

Thank you to our amazing Assistant Principal, Mrs. O'Bryant for her endless efforts and support that she provides our students and staff with each and everyday!  Her dedication and leadership makes a difference!  We see YOU Mrs. O'Bryant and appreciate YOU!  Happy Assistant Principal's week!

☀️Total Solar Eclipse on April 8 ☀️

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At McNair Elementary School, we received a VERY generous donation for approved eyewear from the Nune family so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear with their parent/guardian as they dismiss from school.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing at dismissal donated eyewear from the Nune family for the entire school. This eyewear has been approved for viewing

Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

The NASA website has more information about eye safety.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

McNair Elementary School's

Vision & Mission Development

We are excited to engage in the process of designing a new mission and vision for McNair Elementary School! To support this work, we are gathering feedback from our students and families. We value your voice and are eager to incorporate your feedback in the vision and mission design process.  Please be sure to complete this form by Friday, April 12th.

(Please note that a letter was also sent home with your child in Thursday folders last week should you choose to complete the survey with a handwritten response as opposed to electronically. We once again are so appreciative of your time!)

🧸 Kindergarten Registration: It’s as Easy as 1-2-3…

d

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including kindergarten orientation on May 3rd at 9:30am. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

Beautification Day at McNair ES on Saturday, April 27

McNair Elementary School invites you and your child to work with us to celebrate Earth Day by beautifying the outside of our school.  You and your child will have the opportunity to participate in activities to make our school beautiful and learn about caring for the earth.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 27th from 9-11am.  We hope to see you there!  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

**Please note, if you are willing to make any donations including but not limited to soil, plants, gardening tools, etc., please contact Connie Lehman at cslehman@fcps.edu. We appreciate your support!**

Literacy Is For Tomorrow (LIFT)

McNair Elementary is super excited to have a wonderful new summer reading program this year!  It is important that students read at least six books over the summer, in order to maintain the learning they have done this year.  LIFT gives students an opportunity to shop for six new books in May that will be packaged for the summer months and delivered to students during the last week of school.  The cost of the program is $40 per child.  We invite you to join us and participate in this fun reading initiative! A flyer with more details will be sent home in this week's Thursday folder. Please be on the lookout!

Questions?  Please email our wonderful Reading Specialist, Kelly Carper at kacarper@fcps.edu.

📖 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

Attend a virtual information night to learn about Lexia on Tuesday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. Participants will discover how FCPS is integrating this program into the classroom to support student literacy growth. Tips for supporting students at home will also be shared. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Happy Librarian Day, Ms. Pappano!

National Library Month

April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.

Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation of your school librarian!

🏫 Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

p

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education.

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

For more details on FCPS’ advertised budget, view budget documents, including the FY 2025 Budget Book.

Check out the Budget Calendar for important dates in the budget process as well as opportunities for the community to provide feedback.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact [the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Religious Accommodations in Schools for Students webpage for more information.

Fairfax County Health Department School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024.

We hope you are able to take a few minutes to complete this survey and provide the FCHD your thoughtful feedback.
