In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. Read more at Britannica.com.

Tuesday, April 9, has been designated as a half-O day. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday and all schools and offices will be closed. See the complete School Year Calendar.

FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form

On or around March 18, you should have received an email from FCPS Human Resources (FCPSSurvey@fcps.edu) providing you with a survey link.  This anonymous survey, which is part of my evaluation process, will provide me with valuable insights into how my performance is viewed by the community and staff.  I look forward to receiving the summarized results and using this data to grow as a leader.  Every favorable, unfavorable, and neutral response is useful, and the more parents and staff members who participate, the more reliable the data is to me as a I reflect on my work.  Thank you if you have already completed the survey.  If you haven’t done so yet, please consider it.  HR closes this survey on Friday, April 5.

Please note that FCPS has also sent all families links on a Family Engagement Survey (done bi-annually).  This was sent on a few weeks back by k12Insight.  This anonymous survey is also valuable to our whole school as we work to improve our partnership with families.  Thanks to those of you who completed this as well.  My apologies for multiple surveys being sent to you during the same timeframe.  We appreciate your input.

Playground Now Open

As we return from break, I wanted to share the good news that our playground is back open, as the facilities team has found no evidence of any further wildlife activity. The Office of Facilities Management continues to explore deterrents to prevent future issues and we are hopeful that the playground will be able to safely remain open.

Solar Eclipse Info

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders.

Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. At Bucknell school, we have been able to collect approved eyewear so that students can safely view the eclipse ONLY while wearing the eyewear.  The school will hold supervised viewing outside, from 3:10-3:25pm, for all students.   

Here are some important reminders:

• Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home. 
• Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
• Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

Class Placement Input - Submit by Wednesday, May 1st

Creating class assignments for next year requires careful consideration and the involvement of many staff members.  We know that a good teacher-student match and a productive mix of children are ingredients for success.  Please use this form to share information about your child that the school staff should know, particularly regarding friendships or neighborhood factors, by Wednesday, May 1, 2023.  Our teachers and staff use this information to create preliminary class groupings in May.   

We also ask that you do not request specific teachers.  This does not take into account the many variables to be considered such as grade-level changes or reductions in staff.  It is far more valuable to share particular academic or behavioral needs or concerns.  Be assured that with or without a completed form, your child’s strengths and needs are considered in this lengthy and complex process.

Information About Upcoming SOLs

State and federal law require school divisions to test students in the core academic content areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The assessments that fulfill this requirement look differently based on the grade level and content area. This webpage provides the letter notifying families about the state assessments for students at each grade level 3-8.

• Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in reading, math, and science.
• Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) in reading and math.
• Local Alternative Assessments (LAA) in writing and social studies.

SOL testing will begin the week of April 30th. Below you will find the SOL Testing schedule for Grades 3-6. Please ensure your child attends school on their grade-level testing.

Retesting is available when students receive a score of 375-399 (where 400 is passing) on their first attempt. Parent permission is required for any retests in grades 3-8. If you believe your child would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the SOL test, please complete this permission form linked below and submit it to the school.

One of the Portrait of a Graduate attributes we focus on is being an ethical and global citizen. As students grow as ethical and global citizens, they can act responsibly, recognize and appreciate the similarities and differences among people and their cultures, and care for their community and environment.

Ideas for Discussing Global and Ethical Citizenship at Home

Pay attention to when you use ethical and global citizenship skills throughout your day.  Try to regularly share these examples with your student. Explain how you used specific ethical and global citizenship skills to work through scenarios. Over time, you might share examples of how you used skills well and opportunities for you to grow, too. Sharing your stories will help build understanding of how skills can be used in and beyond school and why these skills are important.

You might ask your student questions such as:

• How were you kind to others?
• What was a choice you made today? What was the impact? What do you want to remember about it?
• When did you notice someone or something that needed help today? What did you do?
• How did you try to understand how a friend was feeling today?
• How were you kind to others?
• What do you want to learn about parts of the world or cultures that you don’t know about yet?
• How can you be a good ethical and global citizen when you are ____ (ex: in the cafeteria; seeing an injustice; outside; noticing someone seems left out)?

Advertised Budget Focuses on Schools and Instruction

Investing in excellence means putting our dollars where it matters most — schools and instruction. Nearly 93% of FCPS full-time staff work directly in our schools. And nearly 86% of FCPS’ Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Advertised Budget is dedicated to instructional programs across all grade levels, including special education. 

Only 5% of the advertised budget is for general support and central administration. Central office administrators represent only 0.8% of total full-time positions.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact Principal Green, our Family Liaison Marilyn Wilson, or their child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Register Today for the Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet School Lottery

Three FCPS elementary magnet schools — Hunters Woods, Bailey’s Primary, and Bailey’s Upper — provide enhanced learning programs in science, technology, and performing arts. Register Today for the FCPS Family Summit

Registration is open for the FCPS Family Summit, which will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan.

Nominations Open for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award

The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families. Read more about Dr. Bussey. 

This award recognizes staff or community members who have demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.

Any FCPS employee, student, or community member can nominate an individual or group for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Wednesday, May 1.  The winner will be recognized at the FCPS Equity Symposium on Tuesday, June 18.

Community Forums on Middle School Start Times

Fairfax County Public Schools is exploring options for adjusting middle school start times and invites the public to be part of the process. Prismatic Services, Inc., an educational consulting firm, will lead the forums. All forums will deliver the same presentation and provide the same feedback opportunities. Please attend the event that works best for your schedule: 

• Monday, April 29, 6-8 p.m., at Glasgow Middle School. 
• Monday, May 6, 6-8 p.m., at Whitman Middle School.
• Monday, May 20, 6-8 p.m., at Hughes Middle School.
• Wednesday, May 22, 6-8 p.m., at Frost Middle School.

Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

Abril es el Mes de Aceptación del Autismo. Uno de cada 44 niños es diagnosticado con un trastorno del espectro autista en los Estados Unidos, según el  CDC. April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.

Abril es el Mes de las Bibliotecas Escolares y es un buen momento para celebrar el papel esencial que desempeñan los bibliotecarios escolares en la vida de los estudiantes.
