The Clearview Community Connect

Stronger together

Dear Clearview Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break filled with rest, relaxation, and plenty of fun! There is excitement in the air this week as we welcomed Yellow Jackets back to Clearview for the final quarter of the year. The fourth quarter promises to be filled with engaging activities, exciting projects, and of course, celebrating all the amazing things you've accomplished so far this year.  We're excited to see your continued growth and development as you explore new concepts and expand your knowledge.

The fourth quarter also brings a variety of division and state-wide assessments. Please see the detailed schedule below.  It’s exciting that students will be able to demonstrate their growth in multiple areas and we are confident that by working together, students will approach the division and state-wide assessments with a positive, can-do attitude.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or compliments you may have. If you have seen a Clearview staff member going above and beyond, fill out an FCPS Cares here.

Assessment (Testing) Schedule

We thank you in advance for scheduling doctor and dentist appointments with this assessment schedule in mind.  Evening and morning routines continue to play an important role every day, including relative to scheduled assessments. As the assessment dates approach, we will provide further resources and information to support your child's success.

Late Arrival, Absences, Early Pick-Ups

We ask families to please let us know about any changes in attendance in advance, when possible.  Please complete the information on this form to communicate this information.  This helps all parties to be notified about the change so office staff, in collaboration with teachers and staff, can provide logistical support in a timely manner.  To support a safe and efficient school dismissal, particularly at this busy time of year, we ask that you please schedule early pick-ups prior to 3:00 pm.

*When picking up early toward the end of the day, please do not park in the bus loop.  Buses begin arriving at Clearview around 3:00 pm.

🤧Seasonal Allergies 🤧

‘Tis the season for seasonal allergies in Northern Virginia!  Tree pollens, grass pollens, and weed pollens are the most common causes of seasonal allergies in this area. According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately one out of five children have seasonal allergies. As with any health issue, consider consulting with your child’s doctor or an allergist for the most appropriate treatment plan especially if seasonal allergies are impacting school attendance and other important life activities.

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

School Library Month

books

April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills

Muslim American Heritage Month

Muslim Heritage

Muslim American Heritage Month is a time for celebrating the history, contributions, culture, and an enhanced understanding of the diverse population of Muslim Americans. View the Fairfax County School Board resolution honoring Muslim American Heritage Month.

Autism Acceptance Month

Autism Awareness month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm students with autism.

Eid- April 10

Eid

Eid Mubarak to those in our Muslim community celebrating! This year's Eid al-Fitr artwork was created by Mark Twain Middle School student Tazrian S. In Islam, Eid al-Fitr is a 3 day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. #OurFCPS

☀️Safe Viewing of the Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The solar eclipse is a fascinating celestial event where the moon will partially block the Sun's light, creating a partial eclipse visible from certain locations. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m. In collaboration with FCPS Risk Management, we have developed a plan for safe viewing of the solar eclipse. As is always the case, it is dangerous to stare at the sun, so we want to make sure that students can witness this phenomenon safely.

Clearview ES has organized an educational opportunity for all students to view the partial eclipse inside via live streaming.  In addition, students in grades 4 and 5 will have the opportunity to observe this partial eclipse outside using indirect viewers (while facing away from the sun).

Because the timing of the eclipse overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe viewing.

🔍 Lightspeed Classroom Management🔍

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

Urgent need for PTA Board nominations for the 2024-25 school year

We have not received enough nominations to have a PTA next year and continue all the good things it brings to our school and community. We have 6 open roles that we need to fill: President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, VP of Events, and VP of Fundraising. Learn more about the roles and nomination process. Then fill out this short online nomination form to express interest for yourself or someone you know. The deadline is next Friday!

Join us for our next Spirit Day at Taco Bamba on Apr. 16

As we continue to help our 6th graders raise funds for their end-of-year celebration, on Tues., Apr. 16, stop by Taco Bamba (2415 Centreville Road in the Clocktower Shopping Center) anytime between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and 20% of your order goes to the Clearview PTA. Use the code “CLEAR” for any online orders and be sure to mention Clearview for any in-store purchases. Last time, your meal purchases raised $144 for the 6th grade party. Can we get to $150 this time?

Let’s talk about children and cell phones on Apr. 17

The Clearview PTA was selected as a 2023 program grant recipient from the National PTA to deliver a 1-hour workshop for families called “Ready, Tech, Go.” Together, we’ll learn what current research says about kids’ tech habits, explore the meaning of “screen readiness,” and discuss ways to promote healthy and responsible device use for all members of the family. We’ll host this workshop as part of our April member meeting and provide dinner for families that night. Mark your calendar for Wed., Apr. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center (1086 Elden Street).

Bakers and buyers needed for Family Science Night & Art Show

We're looking for donated baked goods and snack items to sell at the Clearview Family Science Night and Art Show on Thursday, April 25. Please see this sign-up sheet and let us know where you could donate your special recipe or help during the bake sale. All items should be dropped off at the main office between Tuesday, April 23 and no later than 4:00 pm on Thursday, April 25. Proceeds from the bake sale will go towards the 6th grade celebration.

Lace up your skates for Family Ice Skate Night on May 3

The PTA is joining forces with our 6th grade families for a Family Skate Night on Friday, May 3 from 7:10-9:10 p.m. at SkateQuest (1800 Michael Faraday Court in Reston). Stop by the Clearview table to pick up your $10 pre-paid tickets or pay $12 at the door, both of which include your skate rental. The

cost of each ticket includes a donation for the 6th grade celebration. All Clearview families are encouraged to attend, but parents must stay to supervise all children (no drop offs).

Calling all runners, walkers, and rollers to join us on May 11

A celebrated community tradition, the Clearview 5K and Fun Run is back with some new features for 2024! We want to be more inclusive and bring in participants with all modes of mobility. So we’re encouraging walkers to join us and we’re welcoming wheelchairs and strollers. We also want to encourage you to invite a neighbor or other community member to run, walk, or roll with you. (One little catch, your community member can’t have four legs and a tail. As much as we love our pets, we can’t include them for liability reasons and we need to follow the “no dogs on school property” FCPS rule.) Here are a few other things you need to know:

  • The race takes place Saturday, May 11, at 8 a.m.—rain or shine
  • Registrations that include a race shirt are $15 and due by April 24
  • Registrations that don’t include a shirt are $5 and due by May 3
  • Same-day registration (no shirts) are $10 on May 11 from 7-7:45 a.m.

The event is also a fundraiser for the PTA. If you are interested in being a race sponsor—or have an idea for a local business that may be willing to sponsor—view these details and contact Brian Kelley.
