Header: Message from Mr. Morris

Dear Stratford Landing Families,

As we know, a solar eclipse is happening this Monday, April 8, 2024. The timing starts around 2:04 pm, peaks about 3:20 pm and ends around 4:32 pm. It’s a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

As a school we are prioritizing student safety. Out of an abundance of caution, we will not be viewing the eclipse as a school community. I fully understand this may be disappointing news to hear for many of our students, staff and families.

Please review the following information carefully so you have an understanding about our school operations during the solar eclipse.

  • Beginning at 1:45 pm, we will not permit students to be outside for any reason.
  • We are encouraging our staff to provide instruction and activities for students related to the solar eclipse. FCPS has provided resources for schools and families here. This link includes a live view of the eclipse. We are encouraging our teachers to view the live stream together as a class.
  • Our school dismissal will proceed as usual. We will provide verbal reminders to students not to look directly at the sun and we strongly encourage families to have eclipse safety conversations at home. The NASA website has more information about eye safety. Don’t look at the sun without approved eyewear. Regular sunglasses are not approved eyewear.

If you have questions or would like to speak further about our school operations during the solar eclipse, please reach out to me directly at kmorris@fcps.edu.

Thank you,

Kevin Morris, Principal

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

April Is Month of the Military Child

Month of the Military Child

The Month of the Military Child is a time to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have more than 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community and recognize their strength and resilience.

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we invite students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” for military children. Wear purple on Wednesday, April 17 and on every Friday of April.
Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green; Marine Corps red; and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force blue

For our SLES Military Connected Families

We want to celebrate the month of the military child with them. Please, if you are affiliated to the military take one minute to fill out this form. Thank you!

Gentle Used and Clean Pants Donations

SLES families, the Family Resource Center needs pants donations for our students. We have a large amount of donated clothes, including winter coats, but we are almost out of pants - which usually is what students need the most when accidents happen, especially playing outside and getting muddy. Please consider donating gently used and clean pants to our school when putting away clothes that you want to give away. You can drop them off in the red box by the entrance hallway. We appreciate your kindness!
